Unforgivable Betrayal – Episode 4

“What are you doing?” Charles shouted, standing up immediately. “Are you out of your mind?” he asked, shoving her clothes in her hand and pushing her towards the door.“I’ve fallen for you, Charles! I’m not out of my mind. Stop treating me this way!” Dija begged.
“Please go to your room,” he said, pushing her out and locking the door behind him.The next few days between them were awkward. Charles seemed to be avoiding her, but it didn’t stop her from making her intentions known. Every now and then, she would try her luck till Charles finally fell. He eventually began to grow very fond of her till he found himself falling in love. On the few occasions when he would remember that she was his best friend’s fiancée, he would brush the guilt he felt aside, convincing himself that Chizzy would never return.

A year passed, and there was still no word from Chizzy. They both decided to get married, and a wedding date was fixed.About few days before the wedding, Charles received a call from a foreign number—it was Chizzy. “Oh my . . . what a pleasant surprise!” Charles stammered. “I never thought I was going to ever hear your voice again,” he continued, trying to hide his shock and disappointment.

“You’ll never believe what happened to me. It’s a long story that I’ll share with you when I return,” Chizzy said.
“When are you coming back, bro?” Charles asked.“I’ll be back next weekend. I can’t wait to see you guys, Dija especially. I’ve not been able to reach her for a while. How is she doing?” Chizzy asked.
“She’s all right. Her phone is bad at the moment. That’s probably why you couldn’t reach her,” Charles lied. “I’ll let her know you called,” he assured.

He was careful not to mention anything about the wedding to Chizzy. He also did not tell Dija about the phone call when he saw her later that night for fear that she would change her mind. He had fallen deeply in love with her and could not bear the thought of losing her. He was confident Chizzy would never find them as they were relocating to a new city immediately after the wedding to accept a job offer he just got, and Dija had since changed her phone number.

The wedding day came at last. It was a small, but colourful wedding ceremony attended by family, friends, and well-wishers. They moved to a new city after the wedding as planned and were living happily until, one day, Dija received a phone call.“Hello. Am I speaking to Mrs Khadija Uzor?” the caller asked.“Mrs Uzor speaking,” she replied.“Do you know who is speaking?” the caller questioned.
“No, I don’t. Who am I speaking with?” she asked.
“This is Chizzy, your abandoned fiancé,” the caller replied.
