Unforgivable Betrayal – Episode 10

They had gone to the police to report what happened, and investigations were commenced immediately. The teacher and some other staff of the school were invited for questioning. Dija had also returned to the police station alone much later to report that Dr Ben had been blackmailing her into giving him some money. An arrest could not be made, however, as investigations carried out revealed that he was not in town on the day of Zara’s disappearance. And so far, there had been no evidence to prove that he was responsible. He had also stopped calling to threaten Dija for fear of being arrested.

Four weeks passed, and still, Zara was nowhere to be found. All police investigations carried out had not yielded any positive results. Dija was fast becoming a shadow of herself. Charles, on the other hand, was trying his best to remain strong for both of them.“Don’t worry,” he told Dija, trying to console her when he found her crying. “I’m sure they will find her soon.”“Soon?” she shouted. “It’s over four weeks already, and you’re telling me soon!” she hissed. “How am I sure she’s not dead?” she said, sobbing. “I will never forgive myself if anything happens to her.”

That night, Dija went to bed hoping to catch some sleep at least for an hour or two as she had barely been able to sleep any more than that since Zara’s disappearance. She was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, when her phone beeped. She ignored it and continued to stare at the ceiling like there was some interesting TV programme showing on it.

“Don’t you want to check who’s messaging you?” Charles asked. He had been lying beside her, unable to get any sleep either. “It might just be important, seeing as whoever sent it couldn’t wait till tomorrow,” he suggested.Dija reluctantly stretched over to the bedside table, where her phone was charging, and unplugged her phone. “Oh my goodness!” she screamed, sitting up immediately. She opened the message.“What is it?” Charles asked, moving closer.

She sat there, speechless, staring at her phone. Charles grabbed the phone from her to see what it was that made her react that way. He too stared at the phone like he had just seen a ghost. It was a photo of Zara smiling and eating a bowl of ice cream. The message below it read: “She is alive and well, but you will never see her again.”
