The Blind Alley – Episode 11

“Dear Obioma, i’m so sorry i never had time to discuss with you. You are such a beautiful lady with a beautiful soul. The one year spent with your family was the best to have happened to me. I always will have you people in my prayers. When are you resuming school? I might not make it to your matriculation but definitely would keep in touch. Please reach me with this phone number 08034********* once you have the access. Remain blessed “.

Yours beloved

Mathew Chinedum Eneh.

I read this letter 28times that day… I had mixed feelings. Yes, i was happy he dropped his phone number but maybe i was expecting him to have told me he loved me or at least ended it with, i love you…… Oh, i remembered he was a semi.

My matriculation had come and gone and i resumed school. Mama managed to convince papa to allow me live in the dormitory.

Leaving house for the first time felt strange. I had to make new friends but still hadn’t forgotten Bro. Mathew. Most of my daily itinerary was centered on school and church, had no time for circular activities as such. Making good grades was all that mattered to me.

After my night class that rainy Friday, i recharged my phone and decided to try the phone number Semi dropped with me on the letter he wrote to me before leaving.

It rang twice without any answer. I wondered if he actually gave me the right number or he probably had lost his phone. It was when i tried calling again for the third time that a deep voice that didn’t sound like that of Bro. Mathew picked and asked whom i was.

“Hello,” good evening, my name is Obioma, please i wish to speak with Bro. Mathew “, i stuttered as i responded to the voice.

“i’m sorry, he hasn’t returned from the refectory,”he explained. I would tell him you called when he returns eventually…..

“eheeen… Who would i tell him that called?… It was now he remembered he never asked for my name.

i waited for a while before answering. I didn’t know what to tell him as i didn’t even know whom he was.

“just tell him Obioma his cousin called, ” i lied to the stranger before hanging up.

Bro. Matthew returned my call 30 minutes later with great excitement.

” Jesus!!!, “Obioma…. he shouted over the phone”.

I could feel how happy he was to have heard from me from his voice…….

I immediately recognised his voice…. It felt same, same soft spoken ‘nwa” semi..

“yes, Semi, how are you?,” i happily asked with same excitement.

“i can’t explain to you how happy i am now to have heard from you again,”he kept explaining.

I didn’t know i would connect with you again and didn’t even know you still had my number…

Please where exactly are you?…

Never have i seen Semi sound this excited.

” I’m in School, “i told him.

I’d say you called at the right time dear as next week Thursday would be our visiting day. I’d want you to pay me a visit.

First, i was ambivalent. I didn’t know if i felt happier or rather cold.

Does he really mean i should come to the seminary school? What if i put him in trouble? Do people actually visit them?

All these questions flung through my brian as i kept him hanging on the phone.

“are you still there Obioma, ” he asked with a worried tone.

“Yes,” i’m but i don’t know if that would be the right option as i haven’t travelled to Enugu for the first time,”i explained to him.

Don’t worry dear, i would send you a detailed address and i am very sure you wouldn’t find it difficult to locate here…..” Haba, you’re a big girl na,”he teased me.

Through that night, i couldn’t sleep. Some part of me felt so happy i would see my crush again but on the other hand, i didn’t know if visiting him was a good idea.

Anyway, he said it was ok and i always wanted to see him. I thought it was the best opportunity for me to reunite with him again.

Very early in the morning, Bro.Mathew had sent a detailed address to me through my phone on how to get to Enugu from Awka.

Thursday seems so far to me….. I couldn’t wait for the day to come so i would travel to meet my cousin….. Oh, sorry my Semi !!!

What do you think would probably happen at Enugu?
