In just one day I lost everything I ever had. Dreams were Shattered and hopes were bashed. Just few hours ago we woke up as a family to pray and we had our breakfast and left for our different activities. But now here I am… No dad, mom, And siblings… Just my sister remaining. And I was bent on finding her at least to ascertain the fact that she was still alive. So I and the other children headed for the next community. We were close and as we kept getting close I was happy at least that I still made it alive and that my sister would be safe.
Then from afar I saw the bus that was used in conveying the children of which my kid sister was among. Then I and the other children quickly ran to catch a better picture of the bus and on getting there I was shocked. The bus was ripped open with bullets and I saw blood inside. This meant that the bus was attacked and didn’t reach it’s desired destination. Now the big question hung over my neck “where is my sister and what really happened to the kids in the bus and where they went. Maybe they’ve been killed? Maybe they have been captured?”… I kept asking myself this question until I reached the bus and I saw how badly damaged it was. Fear and uncertainties laid ahead for me as I tried to look for my sister. Unfortunately, the bus did not make it to the next community and just as I thought to myself I saw my sister’s neckless.
It was gifted to her when she passed her exams. She is the most brilliant child in her school and no one could take her place in that school when it comes to taking the first position in School. Just a few meters away I saw the corpse of one of the drivers of the bus and he was long dead. It was clear that my kid sister and the other children were taken away and the reason for this made me even more scared. I became weak and hopeless. Where do I go to find her and how do I go about it. So I sat down outside the bus crying again…

Just then I heard footsteps coming towards our direction and we tried to hide to see who it was. We saw one of the enemies who came to throw away the body of one of the kids. And so out of curiosity I and the other kids followed him behind unknown to him. We traced him till we got to the place where all the kids were kept and we hid ourselves. I could see my sister and the other kids. They were kidnapped and used. Some of the children I had in my company started to point to who they knew and we kept silent as we thought out a rescue mission.
Before I could finish thinking out a plan one of the children with me saw his twin brother who he thought was dead and gone and so out of excitement he shouted “kehinde” and stood up to run to him, I stretched my hands to hold him back but he was fast and before we could say anything he started running towards his twin who was captured by the enemies and he exposed our hiding place too. Just as he did this the enemies shot him down and started to shot at random thinking they were under attack and this lead us to leave our hiding to go rescue our friends and siblings.
We lost alot of kids. I ran to my younger sister and untied her while I still held onto my younger brother’s little friend (the little girl he died saving and I promised to keep alive)… I then held my sister and we made for the next community while I kept shouting to the other kids to follow me. Many of them kept falling and dying… But I kept running… I didn’t look back and as we approached the next community we saw the Nigerian soldiers approaching as they tried to rescue us. Oh! How glad I was to see them finally. I then turned to the other children and shouted to them to run to the soldiers…
They soldiers came in full force and the enemies were outnumbered… My sister fell down while the other little girl ran to one of the military trucks. I bent to carry my sister and as I did I felt a sharp pain on my back, and then another… It pierced into my bones and a thick red liquid substance came falling from my body… I still held my sister but I couldn’t run any longer because my legs were gone… At that point one of the soldiers came for my sister and before he got to her I looked my sister in the eyes and with tears in my own eyes I said “baby, I kept my promise to mom, don’t cry for me, pls be strong and I’m glad you made it”…
She shouted as she saw blood all over my body and she held me so tight… I then gave her her neckless and smiled as the other soldier took her away. She held my hands so tight but I had to say good bye. I fell down after another bullet hit me and with my eyes opened wide I could see my mom and dad and younger brothers smiling to me saying “you were brave and you kept our promise… We are proud of you”… My whole life came flashing before me. I remembered my dreams of being a doctor and how I promised to buy mom and dad a car.
I remembered the shoe my mom bought for me.i remembered those joyful moments I had with my family and I remembered my promise to always be there for my siblings. But here I was lying helpless in the pool of my own blood. I tried to turn to see my sister as she tried to run towards me and she was held back by the soldiers. I was proud I kept my promise to keep her safe. I turned to the enemies direction and I saw that they were dying in their hundreds and I knew the battle has been worn. I was part of the victory.
I smiled as my eyes tried to close. My heart started to slow down and my body became as cold as ice. I couldn’t feel anything again and I couldn’t move either. It was time to bid this earth farewell. And so my brother’s favorite song played out in my head again “we are the world, we are the children, we are the ones to make a brighter day so let’s start giving, there’s a chance we’re taking, we’re taking our own lives, it’s true we make a brighter day just you and me”…
And before it could play out to the end I was already miles away from reality… Yes I died saving my baby sister, I died keeping my promise, I died carrying out my family’s wish… I know she will be save and I know she won’t forget all we did for her…
The crisis ended and normalcy was brought back to the land. I smile in my grave that I contributed to saving my sister’s live and the other other children too… I know my family will be happy too…
The greatest satisfaction is knowing that you did all you could to save a life… Although she would live with the stigma war brings but the flowers on my grave would serve as witness that I was indeed a hero…
