The Edo state chapter of the People’s democratic party, PDP, responded on Thursday to the nullification of its governorship primary election, reaffirming Asue Ighodalo as its candidate.
Justice Iyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja annulled the February 2024 election that produced Ighodalo, citing the unlawful exclusion of 378 delegates who were supposed to vote.
Despite the court’s ruling, the PDP maintains that Ighodalo, a Lagos-based lawyer, will be their flagbearer for the September 21 governorship election in Edo State. Edo PDP Chairman Dr. Tony Aziegbemi stated, “The candidature of Dr. Asue Ighodalo as the flagbearer of the party for the 2024 elections remains intact, and the judgement of the Federal High Court in Abuja did not affect his candidature.”

The PDP accused certain elements of spreading rumours about Ighodalo’s status, suggesting they are threatened by his popularity. The party did not name these elements but assured its members that there is no cause for alarm. “We urge our loyal supporters to remain calm and resolute,” the statement read.
The nullification leaves the PDP’s position uncertain, and it is unclear whether the party will appeal the judgement.
