I immediately called Jumai to inform her about what happened so she could get Abdul to
pass the information to the SSS. She tried calling Yemi’s phones as well, hoping that if the
kidnappers saw a call from a different number they might be willing to pick up but the call
kept ringing with no response.
Finally, when Charly returned home I tried calling again with her phone, this time it was Yemi
that answered, “Help me please! They are threatening to take my li—” she barely finished
her sentence before the call went off. I tried calling back again but this time the phone had
been switched off. Just imagining what she had been going through in the hands of those
kidnappers in the past 24 hours made me cringe. I felt so helpless, afraid that she was going
to be killed and there was nothing I could do about it. Out of desperation, I called Abdul
myself. I felt like Jumai wasn’t putting enough pressure on him and I was getting impatient.
“Isn’t there anything you can do to speed things up?” I asked him.
“The SSS is working on the case and they’ve never disappointed before. I believe they’ll find
her soon,” he reassured me.
Charly had a special kind of calmness since she heard the news. I couldn’t understand why,
maybe it was because Ken was also staying over at her place for the week since I had
spoiled her own plans of going over to his place with my arrival. Coincidentally, her younger
sister who was in town for a job interview was also at her place for the week. I’m sure you’re
beginning to wonder how all of us were supposed to have squeezed into Charly’s place, fear
not! She stays in a 3-bedroom apartment so there was enough room for all of us.
I couldn’t sleep that night again—I kept seeing the kidnapper pointing a gun to Yemi’s head
every time I closed my eyes. As usual, I stayed awake staring at the ceiling.
Time went by slowly and my eyelids grew heavy but I couldn’t sleep. At about 3am, I decided
to get a glass of juice from the kitchen to drink because I was getting thirsty.
Everyone was asleep and I didn’t want to wake anyone so I quietly walked to the kitchen, but
I was surprised to see the kitchen lights off since no one had bothered to turn all the other
lights in the house off.

I was just about to turn them on when I heard soft moaning sounds
coming from there. At first I thought I was hallucinating then I heard what sounded like a
smack. Okayy, what’s going on here? I thought to myself. I peeped through the door only to
see Charly and Ken seriously getting it down in the kitchen.
At 3am? Seriously? Whatever happened to staying in the bedroom? I thought to myself. I
couldn’t believe my eyes. I never knew Charly had such a wild side, plus how was she even
able to get in the mood with everything that was going on? And shouldn’t she have been
resting for work the next day? I guess I must be really old school because I couldn’t think of
any sensible explanation for what I had just seen.
Their backs were turned to the door so they didn’t notice me peep. Part of me wanted to put
on the light, point my hand like a gun at them and scream “gotcha” but I thought better about
playing such a prank… it would probably have gotten me kicked out that night so I silently
crept back to my room instead. I had to forget about drinking any juice because “some
people” had decided to turn the kitchen into a love playground.
The next morning, Charly woke me up with knocks at my door, this was at about 5am. I had
managed to catch a little over an hour of sleep before her knocking woke me up. “What is
it?” I asked, yawning as I opened the door to let her in. She looked so wide awake, I didn’t
want to imagine that they were just finishing with their kitchen project after almost 2 hours.
“Why are you so wide awake?” I asked curiously,
“That’s not important,” she replied, waving my question aside. “Babe I need your help,
something really terrible just happened,” She said looking worried.
“Oh my God! Have they finally killed Yemi?!” I asked, squeezing her shoulders.
“No it’s not that,” she said, wriggling herself free with a look on her face that was obvious she
thought I was losing it.
“Then what is it?” I asked anxiously.
“Uhm I need you to prescribe some pills for me,” she began.
“What’s the matter?” I asked.
“Well, Ken’s condom got torn last night and we didn’t discover it in time,” she said, looking
embarrassed. “I’m scared of getting pregnant, I’m not ready for another baby,” She
explained.
I wanted to reply by saying “Why would your condom get torn? When you won’t stay in one
place!” but I realised I would be sounding like an annoying mum, besides I’d have had to
explain what I meant by my statement and risk exposing myself so I just said “Hmm! So with
all these things going on you still have time for bedroom activities?” Trust Charly to ignore
my sarcasm, she just hissed and said, “Are you prescribing something for me or not?”
I told her she could use emergency contraception such as the morning-after pills, which are
used to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or if contraception methods like
condoms fail. They are most effective when taken immediately after intercourse but can still
be taken up to 72 hours after intercourse, although effectiveness declines as time goes by.
Many women make the mistake of using it as an everyday method of contraception, but this
is not right. Morning-after pills are meant for emergency contraception and are not as
effective when used as regular contraception. There are other regular contraception
methods that can be used such as oral contraceptive pills, intra-uterine contraceptive
devices and contraceptive implants or injections. Every woman should speak to her doctor
about the most suitable method of contraception.
Also, It’s important I add that contrary to popular belief, use of morning after pills does not
lead to infertility. By the way for those who don’t know, contraception is any method used to
prevent pregnancy, some people know it as “family planning”.
I explained all these to Charly and prescribed a morning after pill for her to use.
Shortly after I was done with my lecture, my phone rang. I was still grumbling to Charly about
how I hated early morning phone calls when I looked at the caller ID and saw that it was
Yemi’s number calling. “It’s the kidnappers!” I screamed in shock. This was the first time they
were going to make an attempt to reach anyone. Previously, we had been the ones trying to
reach them… I could feel my heart beating really fast as I bent down to pick up the
phone—had they already killed Yemi? Were they calling to tell me where to find her body?
“Hello,” I said, answering the phone in a shaky voice as I braced myself for what they were
about to say…
