LG Autonomy: 13 States Rush To Hold Council Polls

After last Thursday’s Supreme Court ruling banning the use of caretaker committees to administer federal funds, at least 13 states have now set specific dates for Local Government elections.

The states that have started getting ready for council elections are Kaduna, Kogi , Bauchi, Kastina, Osun , Enugu, Benue , Rivers, Jigawa, Imo, Kebbi, Abia, and Anambra.

The Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission has set the date for the council election on October 19, 2024.

During a gathering with political groups and other concerned parties on Tuesday, the Chairperson of Kaduna SIECOM, Hajara Mohammed, revealed that the current council members were inaugurated on November 1, 2021, and will conclude their term on October 31, 2024.

The Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission has set October 19 as the date for the upcoming local government election to be held across the state.

During a stakeholders’ meeting held in Lokoja on Tuesday, Mamman Eri, the Chairman of the electoral commission, stated that the decision was made in accordance with the Constitution and the authority given to the state Independent Electoral Commission.

The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission has scheduled the local government elections in the state for August 19th.

At a news conference in Bauchi on Tuesday, Alhaji Ahmad Makama, the Chairman of the commission, announced that all preparations have been finalized to guarantee transparent and equitable elections.
