“Ama drop that knife NOW” Deji shouted, stepping back slowly, “you don’t tell me what to do, you are not the boss of me” Ama said moving closer, “you’re acting insane” Deji replied, visibly frightened. Ama was acting like someone who had Intermittent explosive disorder, though she was yet to be diagnosed.
Intermittent explosive disorder is a mental health condition characterised by frequent outbursts of anger or aggression which are usually out of proportion when compared to the situation that triggered them. Outbursts could include verbal arguments or physical fights. People with this disorder are usually aware that their outbursts of anger are inappropriate but usually feel like they can’t control their actions. The cause of this disorder is still unclear but genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role. Treatment for this disorder is psychotherapy.
“What did I do to warrant this undue harassment?” Deji asked, “ Was it a mistake giving you the respect of informing you in person before leaving?” He continued, “you ruined me, Deji. You cut short my dreams” Ama said, still pointing the knife at him, “why would you bring me here and abandon me to be with another woman?” She said angrily , “you pushed me away Ama. It was you who set me up and called the police on me. If not for little evidence I could have been behind bars by now. Wouldn’t you have been left alone then? Isn’t that what you wanted?” Deji asked,
“I just needed you to be responsible” Ama replied, “I needed you to stand up and be a man for once” she added, “but you never lacked anything when we were back home, I gave you everything you needed but you wanted more and that was why you insisted that we came here” Deji reminded her, “I was tired of staying in that $hithole” Ama replied, “It was suffocating me, I needed to breathe” she retorted, “well hope you’re breathing fine now” Deji added sarcastically looking at the door behind Ama and trying to figure out a way to get past her without getting killed, “I would have been fine if you had just played your own part but you had to leave me to do all the work, just because you never liked the idea of coming here” she replied,
“Maybe if you had just listened to me, maybe if you had just agreed to go ahead and test the waters before forcing us to come along with you, then things might have been different” Deji spoke softly, “Don’t you dare blame me for this” Ama said raising her voice and tightening her grip around the knife, “that still doesn’t explain why you so easily ended up in the arms of another woman and now you want to leave me here to continue with other women back home, after you ruined my life” Ama said, moving closer as Deji moved back into the children’s room, the door was open, he didn’t even realise till he was inside already, “STOP THIS MADNESS AMA” he shouted, waking his daughter up. Startled by the noise, she looked around rubbing her eyes only to see Ama holding a knife and pointing it at Deji, “Mummy No” she screamed distracting Ama who turned to look at her.

Deji immediately seized the opportunity and pushed Ama out of the way and ran out of the room, but before he could unlock the front door, she caught up with him and they began to struggle. Deji was holding her wrist with one hand and trying to force the knife out of her hand with the other hand while Ama was pushing hard against him trying to stab him in his belly. Their daughter ran to them trying to separate both of them and in the process was stabbed by Ama who didn’t notice she was there.
“Mummy” she cried, falling to the ground as her clothes slowly began to get soaked with blood, “what have you done?” Deji screamed, looking horrified as he rushed to lift his daughter from the ground, slowly, she began to lose consciousness. “Why Ama,Why?” Deji screamed holding his daughter in his arms as Ama stood there staring in shock with the blood-stained knife in her hand.
