Dangerous Disguise – Episode 7

I couldn’t believe my eyes, I thought I was hallucinating. Oh yeah! That’s another big word for “seeing things.” Hallucinations are false perceptions of objects or events involving your senses. Hallucinations could involve your  sight (visual hallucination), hearing (auditory or sound hallucinations) , smell (olfactory hallucinations), touch (tactile hallucinations) and taste (gustatory hallucinations). They may seem real, but they’re not. In my own case, it was my sight that was involved. Chemical reactions or abnormalities in the brain are responsible for causing hallucinations.

Hallucinations are usually a symptom of psychosis-related disorders such as schizophrenia, they can also result from use of substances such as alcohol or recreational drugs like coc@ine, m@riju@na etc. neurological conditions such as epilepsy or parkinson’s disease could also be responsible for hallucinations. More commonly, people may experience hallucinations when they fall asleep or when they are waking up from sleep, hallucinations associated with sleep are usually not a cause for concern.

It turns out, I wasn’t hallucinating. It was David making a grand entrance and everyone could see him too, so I wasn’t going crazy. My heart skipped a beat as I locked eyes with him, standing tall and confident at the back of the auditorium. He was dressed impeccably, his presence commanding attention even amidst the sea of graduates and attendees. But what truly left me in awe was the person who stood beside him—Asake, the musical heartthrob who had captured Ugochi’s heart.

The sight of David and Asake walking down the aisle of the auditorium, greeted by cheers and applause, was nothing short of spectacular. They were met with awe-struck glances, excited whispers, and delighted gasps. It was a surreal moment that I never could have anticipated. “Who the hell is this guy?” I kept wondering to myself.

As they reached their seats, David’s eyes found mine again. A smile played on his lips, a silent reassurance that he was there to support me, to celebrate this milestone with me.
The dean’s speech continued, his words now accompanied by the murmurs of the crowd as they exchanged excited comments about David and Asake’s unexpected appearance. It was a moment that overshadowed the ceremony itself, a testament to the unpredictability of life’s twists and turns.

When the time came for graduates to be called up individually to receive our diplomas, I walked across the stage with a mix of pride and gratitude. As I descended the stage, I couldn’t help but steal glances at David, who was watching me with unwavering support. By this time, Asake had left, he only stayed around for a few minutes.

After the ceremony, amidst the flurry of congratulatory hugs and photos, David and I finally had a chance to speak. “You made quite an entrance,” I said with a laugh, gesturing towards his front-row seat.

He grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. “I thought it was about time I made a grand gesture.”

“You definitely succeeded,” I replied, feeling a warmth spreading through my chest. “But how did you manage to bring Asake along?”

David shrugged casually. “Well, it turns out we share a mutual friend who thought it would be a fun surprise.”

I couldn’t help but feel a sense of surrealism—here I was, celebrating my graduation with a celebrity guest appearance that happened all because of me.
As the crowd began to disperse, David turned to me with a warm smile. “Would you like a ride back home?” he asked.

I nodded, grateful for the offer. “Sure, that would be great.”

We made our way to the car park together. As we approached the car park, I noticed David was moving in the direction of a sleek, Maserati GranTurismo convertible car that stood gleaming in the sunlight, instantly catching my attention.

“Is that your car?” I asked looking confused, “Yes it is” he replied,

“Wow, nice car!” I couldn’t help but exclaim.

“Thanks.I had to get this while the windscreen of my SUV was getting repaired.” He replied

“You mean you bought this because of what Rowland did to your windscreen?” I asked, looking shocked.

“Yup” he replied casually, like it was no big deal. “Who is this guy?” I wondered again as we walked towards his car.

As we got closer, I noticed David’s expression shifting from surprise to confusion. Leaning against his car was a familiar face, one that I had seen at the club, it was one of the guys that had helped him up that day.

David frowned, baffled by his friend’s presence. “Femi, what are you doing here?” he asked,

Femi straightened up, his face a mix of urgency and concern. “David, we need to leave now. There’s fire on the mountain.”

David’s brows furrowed even further. “Fire on the mountain? What are you talking about?”

Femi looked around nervously, as if worried that someone might be eavesdropping. “I’ll explain later, but we have to go, David. It’s important.”

David turned to me, his expression apologetic. “Chioma, I’m so sorry, but I have to go with Femi right now. It’s urgent.”

I nodded, though my mind was whirling with confusion. “Of course, David. Take care, and let me know if everything’s okay.”

With a quick farewell, David hopped into his luxury convertible and sped off with Femi following behind in a white lamborghini, leaving me standing there in shock, confusion, and a tinge of embarrassment.
