Rowland followed my gaze and chuckled softly. “I guess our chat wasn’t exciting enough to hold your attention.”
I had been staring at David, the handsome stranger from the party who had just walked in and was speaking to one of the waiters. I tore my eyes away from him and turned back to Rowland, offering him a small smile. “I’m sorry, Rowland. It’s just that I got a bit distracted” I replied.
“Isn’t that the guy from the club?” Rowland asked, looking visibly angry, “wh-what guy?” I stammered, “Don’t pretend. You and I both know what I’m talking about” he hissed.
I could see from the corner of my eye that David had picked up his food and was heading towards the door. I wasn’t going to let another opportunity to get to know him pass me by. I immediately stood up and began heading towards the door.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Rowland asked, dragging me back by the wrist. Instinctively, I yanked my wrist out of his firm grip and continued my journey towards the door.
The crazy thing was that I hadn’t even thought of what I was going to say to David when I finally caught up with him.
He had already walked out the door by the time I reached the exit. I made my way out of the restaurant hoping to catch up with him. I took a quick scan at the cars parked in front of the restaurant and sure enough, I spotted him. He was standing by a shiny black SUV, it was the latest version of the Range Rover sport car. Apparently, not only was he handsome with a body to die for, but his pocket seemed to be loaded too judging from his car.
He was just about to enter his car and drive off so I quickly shouted his name to get his attention. He turned to see who had called his name and then he saw me.
He looked like he was trying to figure out who I was, “we met at Club X the other day” I said, offering him an explanation to the questions he probably had in his head. “ I’m Chioma,” I added, offering him a handshake. “Ooh! I remember you” he replied nodding his head while shaking my hands. For someone who looked so strong and muscular, his hands were soft. My palms probably felt like sandpaper when compared to his. I’m too ashamed to admit, but at that point, I believe it was official, I was already falling for him.

“ I’m really sorry about what happened the other day” I began. Just as our conversation was starting to flow, a voice interrupted from behind me. “Excuse me, is this guy bothering you, Chioma?”
I turned around to find Rowland standing there, a tense expression on his face. My surprise was evident, but before I could respond, David spoke up. “Not at all. We were just having a friendly chat.”
Rowland’s eyes narrowed, and his jaw tightened. “I see,” he muttered, his tone dripping with a mixture of annoyance and something else I couldn’t quite place.
I exchanged a quick glance with David, both of us seemingly taken aback by Rowland’s sudden appearance. As much as I wanted to continue getting to know David, the tension in the air was palpable.
I continued to stand there, caught in the middle of an unexpected encounter between Rowland and David. The atmosphere grew increasingly awkward, and I felt a growing unease as the two men locked eyes, their energies clashing like opposing forces.
Rowland’s gaze shifted between David and me, his expression a mix of insecurity and lingering frustration. David remained composed, offering a polite smile. “Care to join us?” David asked, his voice with a tint of sarcasm.
Rowland’s jaw clenched, and I could practically feel the tension radiating from him. I knew that his sudden appearance was no coincidence—he was clearly trying to stake his claim, even though we were no longer together.
I glanced at David, feeling a mix of embarrassment and confusion. I didn’t want him to think that I was still involved with Rowland in any way. “David, this is Rowland,” I said, introducing them. “We used to date, but we’re not together anymore.”
David nodded, his expression remaining neutral. “Nice to meet you,” he said curtly, extending a hand for a brief handshake with Rowland.
Rowland’s response was curt as well, and it was clear that he was struggling to maintain his composure. “I can’t say the same for you,” he replied, keeping both hands in his pocket.
The tension between them was palpable, and I felt like a deer caught in headlights. I couldn’t help but wonder what was going through David’s mind as he stood there, caught in this unexpected confrontation.
Just then, my phone buzzed with a message notification. I glanced at it briefly and saw that it was a message from Ugochi, letting me know that she had forgotten to take her keys along with her when she left and was locked outside our room waiting for me. It was a perfect excuse to break away from the awkward situation.
“I actually have to go,” I said, offering a weak smile. “It was nice chatting with you, David.”
He nodded, a hint of disappointment flickering in his eyes. “We can continue this conversation over the phone, I guess” he added.
“And why would she want to do that?” Rowland interjected, “sure, why not?” I replied, ignoring Rowland, “that way I won’t have an unwanted bodyguard interrupting me” I muttered under my breath.
“Great! Punch in your number” David replied, handing me his phone, the latest version of the iphone.
“You must be moving mad,” Rowland replied, snatching David’s phone from me. He had been standing in anger, watching our conversation unfold.
“Dude, is there a problem?” David asked looking sternly at Rowland, I could tell that he was beginning to lose his cool.
“The only problem here is you having the audacity to chat my girlfriend up in my presence” Rowland replied
“Your girlfriend?” David chuckled, “ but you heard the lady, she introduced you to me as her EX” David replied, dragging the word “ex” for further emphasis. “ I don’t remember hearing anything of the sort,” Rowland retorted.
“It’s not my problem if you’re suffering from hearing loss. Just hand me back my phone” David replied.
“Ouch!” I thought to myself, that was definitely a terrible diss. I mean, hearing loss is something you would usually find among the ageing population and not a young guy like Rowland. It’s also possible for young people to experience hearing loss probably as a result of build up of ear wax over time, an ear infection or exposure to loud noise over time. Hearing loss caused by ageing is called Presbycusis. When people get older, the inner ear breaks down over time, this could eventually lead to hearing loss. Exposure to loud noises also damages the cells in the inner ear, putting you at risk of hearing loss. So, if you love your ears and don’t want to receive the kind of diss that Rowland did, then, stop exposing your ears to loud noise.
“And if I don’t?” Rowland asked, looking eye to eye with David as if daring him, “Trust me, you don’t want us to pick up from where we left off at the club” David replied.
“On the contrary, I actually do,” Rowland replied, spitting in David’s face. Before he could even react, Rowland threw David’s phone forcefully at the windscreen of his Range Rover sport, causing it to smash in a split second.
“Oh! My gosh!” I screamed, holding my hands to my mouth as I stood in horror, staring back and forth between the broken windscreen and the two men standing before me. “What on earth just happened here?” a voice in my head screamed as I started to feel pounding heartbeats from within my chest.
