Dangerous Disguise – Episode 2

Alright, guys, gather ’round because we’re diving into another chapter of my whirlwind story.
Now, let’s get back to where we left off.

So, there we were, Ugochi and I, amidst a sea of clothes that had turned our room into a fashion battleground. Her mission was to find the perfect outfits for the “bye bye to med school party” that was going down that very day at Club X.

Ugochi was still bouncing around like a hyperactive puppy on a caffeine high all because her musical heartthrob Asake was headlining the party. By the way, did you know that taking too many energy drinks, typically more than 2 daily, puts you at risk of excess caffeine intake because energy drinks contain high amounts of caffeine? You might think that caffeine is harmless, but when taken in excess, it can cause headaches, insomnia, frequent urination or inability to control urination, muscle tremors and so many other negative effects on the body.So if you’re an energy drink junkie, you might want to consider weaning yourself off it.

Ugochi was positively buzzing. She told me about her master plan to catch Asake’s eye at the party. As for me, I was pretty much just tagging along, more like being dragged along.
While Ugochi had devised a master plan to get Asake to notice her, I had devised one to avoid Rowland. I knew he was definitely going to be there, and I’d rather have been bitten on the bum by a swarm of mosquitoes than run into him. I made up my mind to stay away from the bar, that way, I probably wouldn’t bump into him because the bar was his favourite place, as he was a really heavy drinker.

Later that night, we were all dressed and prepped for the party, a night that promised memories and maybe even a little bit of chaos. Ugochi was practically radiating sparkles, and I had to admit, her energy was contagious. Ella, of course, was buzzing with her usual zest for life.

As we made our way to Club X, I couldn’t help but think about the irony of it all. I was nursing a broken heart after my ex’s betrayal, and yet, fate had thrown me into a sea of celebration and excitement. Life has its way of turning your plans inside out, doesn’t it?

The party was in full swing by the time we arrived. The beats throbbed through the air, lights danced across the room, and people moved steadily to the beats of the music playing. Ugochi was already in her element, dancing. Ella was right by her side, dancing and cheering her on.

“Chioma, did you see him?” Ugochi suddenly shouted sneaking up on me after she spotted Asake.

I nodded, trying to hide my lack of enthusiasm.  “Yeah, I saw him.” I replied as Ella joined us buzzing with excitement,  “This party is amazing! guess what? I just got a glimpse of Asake!” she said

Ugochi and I exchanged amused glances. Ella was always on the lookout for excitement, She was grinning from ear to ear like a fat kid that just received cake because she thought she had been the first to spot Asake.

Asake’s performance was electrifying, he had the crowd spellbound with his voice. Ugochi was living her dream, dancing and singing along to all his songs. Ella was right there with her, caught up in the contagious energy.

I, on the other hand, was a little absent-minded as I was dealing with conflicting emotions. Amidst the music and laughter, my ex’s face floated like an unwanted ghost in my head. But then something incredible happened. I locked eyes with someone across the room—eyes that held a depth of mystery and intrigue that I couldn’t resist.

As cliché as it sounds, time seemed to slow down. Our gaze held for what felt like an eternity before I quickly turned away, my heart pounding. What was it about this handsome stranger that stirred such a reaction in me?

“Looks like someone’s caught your eye.” Ugochi teased when she noticed I was distracted.

My attempt at a nonchalant shrug failed miserably, and I knew Ugochi could see right through it. She nudged me playfully, her eyes gleaming with excitement.”You found a replacement for Rowland so soon, hey?” she teased. Apparently, she had been watching me for the last few seconds and had caught me looking at the handsome stranger.

Luckily, Ella cut in and asked Ugochi to accompany her to the bar to get a drink, so I didn’t have to bother coming up with a reply. I didn’t go along with them because I was staying away from the bar to avoid bumping into Rowland.

Just a few minutes later, a tap on my shoulder startled me. I turned to see my worst nightmare, Rowland was standing right behind me. He was already half drunk and reeking of alcohol.

“Mind if I join you?” he asked, squeezing my butt with his left hand while holding a bottle of beer in the other. “How dare you?” I replied, shoving his filthy hand away.

My heart raced as Rowland’s familiar, menacing presence invaded my space. The mixture of alcohol and arrogance emanating from him was suffocating. My attempt to push his unwanted touch away was met with a chilling grin that sent shivers down my spine.

“Come on, Chioma, don’t be like that,” he said, his speech slurred by the alcohol. “I know you’ve been missing me.”

The memories of his betrayal surged back, fueling my anger. Before I could respond, a firm hand landed on my shoulder, and I turned to see the handsome stranger standing there, his expression a mix of concern and determination.

“Is everything okay here?” he calmly asked, Rowland’s bloodshot eyes shifted to him as he sized him up “Who’s this, Chioma? Your new little plaything?”

The handsome stranger’s grip on my shoulder tightened, and his gaze remained unwavering. “I think it’s time for you to leave her alone,” he said, his voice dripping with a subtle warning.

Rowland’s laughter was bitter, laced with alcohol-fueled aggression. “Oh, I see. You’re her knight in shining armour now, huh?” he replied.

Before anyone could react, Rowland’s hand swung, hitting the bottle of beer he held on the handsome stranger’s head. Glass shattered, and blood trickled down his forehead as he staggered back, caught off guard by the sudden attack.

Ella and Ugochi had returned from the bar and were now frozen in shock, their eyes wide as they witnessed the horrifying scene.

“WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?” I screamed as the handsome stranger dropped to the floor holding his head with both hands covered in blood while Rowland stood trembling with the other half of the broken bottle in his hand.
