Court of Appeal Nullifies Tribunal Verdict, Sacks Elumelu, Reinstates LP’s Okolie

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reinstated Ngozi Okolie, a member of the Labour party, as the legitimate representative for Aniocha/Oshimili Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives elections.

This decision overturns the ruling of the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, which had previously declared Ndudi Elumelu of the People’s Democratic Party as the winner of the election.

During the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC anounced Okolie as the victor with 53,879 votes, defeating the incumbent representative, Hon Ndudi Elumelu, who received 33,456 votes. However, the tribunal disqualified Okolie, claiming that the Labour Party had not properly nominated him.

In a recent ruling, the Court of Appeal disagreed with the tribunal’s findings and affirmed that the Labour Party had indeed validly nominated and sponsored Ngozi Okolie as their candidate. This decision effectively restores Okolie’s status as the duly elected representative for the constituency.
