Belgium defeat England to Win bronze medal in the FIFA World cup

Eden Hazard celebrates after scoring the second goal against England

Meunier scored after just four minutes and Hazard made sure of victory in the final 10 minutes.

Gareth Southgate lost the third place play-off as England’s World Cup campaign ended in defeat.

Belgium’s man of the match Eden Hazard completed a superb display with his nation’s second goal after Thomas Meunier opened the scoring in the first half.

It looked a game too far for England boss Southgate’s men as they made five changes but could not find much energy or freshness for a game no-one really wants.

England midfielder Eric Dier came closest to scoring but his chip in the second half was cleared off the line by his Tottenham team mate Toby Alderweireld.

There was some consolation in that Harry Kane will surely win the Golden Boot with his six goals because, even though he did not score, his main rival Romelu Lukaku also drew a blank.

But it was another off day for Kane who looked tired and flat as England’s World Cup adventure ended in defeat in St Petersburg.
