The Barcelona board held a meeting on Monday to finalise Valverdeās severance package. Former Betis and Las Palmas coach Quique SetiĆ©n takes over as coach
Ernesto Valverde‘s tenure asĀ Barcelona coachĀ came to an end on Monday evening after club directors voted in favour of terminating his contract with the club.Ā Valverde supervised this morning’s training session at the Ciutat EsportivaĀ before holding a brief meeting with club presidentĀ Josep MarĆa Bartomeu.Ā Quique SetiĆ©n has agreed terms to take over as Barcelona coachalthough by late on Monday night there was still no official word from the club. At the time of punlication, SetiĆ©n’s agent Edoardo Crnjar was negotiating the terms of the contract with Bartomeu and Valfverde’s representatives finalising details of his severance package.
Directors were called for a crisis meeting shortly after 15:00 hours today and took over three hours to reach a final decision.Ā A statement was expected at 21:00 hours, supposedly to confirmingĀ Valverde’s dismissalĀ andĀ SetiĆ©n’s appointment. By 22:30 there was still no official word from the club.
ValverdeĀ leaves withĀ BarcelonaĀ as the defending LaLiga champions, topping the table on goal difference and with aĀ Champions LeagueĀ Last 16 tie againstĀ NapoliĀ to look forward to next month. He is the firstĀ BarƧa coachĀ to be axed by the club sinceĀ Louis van GaalĀ in 2003.
Valverde arrived at Camp Nou in May 2017 as Luis Enrique’s successor. He signed a two-year contract with the club with the option of a third and extended that arrangement by another 12 months in February last year. While he deliveredĀ successive league titlesĀ in 2017-18 and 2018-19,Ā Valverde‘s time at the helm grew increasingly more turbulent after a series ofĀ damaging results in Europe. First there was the embarrassmentĀ of surrendering a 4-1 advantage to Roma in the Champions League quarter finals in April 2018Ā and worse followed;Ā the 4-0 defeat to Liverpool last season came as such as blow to moraleĀ thatĀ BarƧa still haven’t quite recovered.
The final straw was last week’sĀ Spanish Super Cup defeat to AtlĆ©tico Madrid. Apart fromĀ two LaLiga titles,Ā Valverde‘sĀ BarƧaĀ also won two other domestic trophies – theĀ Copa del ReyĀ (2017-18) andĀ Spanish Super CupĀ (2018).
BarƧaĀ put the feelers out for a replacement over the weekend but their invitations were declined byĀ Xavi, who is under contract atĀ Al-SaddĀ andĀ Ronaldo Koeman, who also has commitments with theĀ Netherlands national team. Other possible replacements emerged this morning includedĀ Mauricio Pochettino,Ā Massimiliano Allegri,Ā Roberto MartĆnez,Ā Thierry Henry, B team coachĀ Francesc Xavier GarcĆa Pimienta,Ā Gabi MilitoĀ andĀ SetiĆ©n. Leading favourite Xavi did meet withĀ Ćric AbidalĀ andĀ Ćscar GrauĀ at the weekendĀ but stated that now is not the right moment for him to switch clubs.
Quique SetiĆ©nĀ will take over coaching duties with the first team squad – at least until the end of the current season. TheĀ 61-year-old Cantanbrian coachĀ has almostĀ 20 years’ of coaching experienceĀ – almost exclusively at Spanish clubs in the top two divisions. He has been linked to theĀ BarƧa jobĀ several times in the past – most recently during his spell atĀ Betis, his last coaching post.Ā SetiĆ©n’s teamsĀ tend to play aĀ flamboyant, attacking brand of footballĀ – an attractive style which he introduced at bothĀ Las PalmasĀ andĀ Betis.Ā He was sacked by the Sevilla-based club in May last year, despite his side achieving an impressive double over bothĀ Real MadridĀ andĀ BarƧaĀ inĀ LaLiga. After leavingĀ Betis,Ā SetiĆ©nĀ decided to take a sabbatical despite having numerous offers to return to coaching in Spain and abroad.
