David took a deep breath before he began to explain, his eyes locked onto mine. “Baby, I didn’t want to tell you this because I was trying to protect you. But I can see now that keeping secrets is hurting us more than it’s helping.”
He went on to reveal a shocking truth: he was not the person I thought he was. In fact, he was an undercover detective, working on a dangerous case involving a powerful criminal organisation.
“I understand how it must look,” David said, his voice filled with remorse. “Having her picture might seem suspicious, but it’s part of my job. I need to have all the information to investigate the case.”
I was overwhelmed by a whirlwind of emotions – relief that David wasn’t involved in anything criminal, anger that he had kept such a significant secret from me, and fear for his safety considering the danger he was facing. Despite my mixed feelings, I couldn’t help but empathise with the burden he had been carrying.
“I wish you had trusted me enough to share this with me from the beginning,” I said, my voice cracking with emotion. “We’re partners, in every sense of the word. I want to help you, to support you through this. But I need honesty from you, no matter how difficult the truth might be.”
David reached out and gently took my hands in his. “I’m so sorry, honey,” he whispered, his eyes filled with regret. “I should have trusted you. I’m sorry for letting you down.”
There were only a few days left till my due date, excitement filled the air as David and I eagerly anticipated the arrival of our little one. We had prepared the baby’s room, bought every baby item there was to buy and even the ones we would probably never get around to using. I had packed my hospital bag ready with all the essential items I would need.
For those of you wondering, a hospital bag is just a nice name for a bag that contains all the items that a pregnant mother will need to take to the hospital for herself and her baby when she is going to put to bed. Some people call it a baby bag. Some babies like to surprise their mothers and arrive days or even a few weeks to their due date, so it’s important that you have your bags packed and ready at least 3 weeks to your due date. It is important that you also make sure to pack enough clothes to last you and your baby for at least 3 days, some women may stay in the hospital for shorter or longer depending on the nature of their delivery. Items that must be in your hospital bag include clothes for you and your baby, toiletries for both of you, towels, baby blanket, sanitary pads, diapers, disposable pants, breast pads, nipple cream(if you intend to breastfeed), feeding bottles (incase you don’t start lactating immediately or are not lactating enough and your baby needs to take formula), picture ID, health insurance card, ATM card, phone charger and any other essential items you may need.
As my due date approached, my mom became a frequent visitor. She arrived armed with bundles of baby essentials, ensuring I was well-prepared for the baby’s arrival. Together, we went through the checklist, double-checking the baby bag, making sure all the necessities were packed and ready for our hospital stay.
As the days passed, my excitement grew, mingled with a touch of nervousness. I couldn’t wait to hold our baby, to marvel at the tiny fingers and toes, to witness the miracle of life that David and I had created together. I found solace in the support of my family, especially my mom, whose comforting presence made the waiting more bearable.
It had been two days past my due date and our baby had still not arrived. My mum had been staying over at our house for the past five days in anticipation of our baby’s arrival.
One night, we were sitting in the living room, David had retired to bed early, Mum was watching TV and I was idly scrolling through my phone, when suddenly a breaking news announcement popped up on the TV screen, it was an update on the ongoing kidnapping case. Only that this time the update showed a CCTV screenshot of someone that looked like David and three other young men, two of whom I identified to be Femi, David’s best friend and another one of the guys he regularly hung out with. They were wanted for the kidnapping of the young girl. A handsome reward was on offer for anyone who could provide the police with useful information leading to their arrest.

My heart skipped a beat as I watched the breaking news alert. Disbelief washed over me, I struggled to comprehend the situation. How could the man I loved, the father of my child, be involved in such a heinous crime?
Mum gasped, her hand covering her mouth in shock. “Chioma, is that…?” she began, her voice trailing off as she stared at the screen, her eyes wide with horror.
I shook my head in denial, my throat dry, unable to form words. The room felt like it was closing in on me. I struggled with the thought that David, the man I had planned a life with, the person I trusted with my deepest fears and desires was wanted for a crime.
I was still struggling to maintain my sanity, I was already in a lot of emotional distress, everything seemed to be happening so fast. Suddenly I felt fluid trickle down my laps, Like I was peeing on myself. “What is happening? I can’t possibly be peeing on myself’” I thought. I stood up to check myself and immediately, there was a gush of fluid from between my legs. The sofa and floor around me were drenched with amniotic fluid. My water broke!
My mother screamed when she realised what was going on, “sit down” she shouted, “don’t let the baby fall out.”
David must have heard her screaming because he rushed down immediately. “What’s the matter? What’s going on?” he said looking confused as he stared back and forth between myself, my mum and the wet floor.
The room fell into an eerie silence as David stared at us with confusion on his face. The reality of the impending childbirth juxtaposed against the breaking news that I had just seen on TV was fast beginning to weigh down on me. This was supposed to be a happy moment in my life, but my heart was heavy.
Questions swirled in my mind as I stared back at David, looking ever so handsome. Beneath the handsome face was a huge mystery which needed to be unravelled, an unmasking that was necessary to reveal his true identity. Was he really involved in the kidnapping? Could it have been a case of mistaken identity? How had I missed the signs? What had driven him to commit such an act? And most importantly, how was I going to protect our child from the truth about her father?
