“What would you ever do without me?” she finally said, rolling her eyes, “Oh please! Don’t be silly” David replied, rolling his eyes.
“Chioma, meet Olamide, a family friend” he said pointing towards her, “Olamide, meet Chioma” he said pointing back towards me. “And she is?” Olamide asked, “She’s a friend,” David replied.
“What kind of friend stands by and watches your windscreen get destroyed?” Olamide asked, “Now that’s you jumping into conclusions, young lady” David replied, “What gave you the impression that she was there when it happened?” he added, “I don’t know” Olamide shrugged, “it’s just a gut feeling” she said looking suspiciously at me.
It was less than 5 minutes into our meeting and already, I didn’t like her. I felt she was condescending and snobbish. “Well your gut feeling is not always correct” David replied.
“Where’s the mechanic?” he asked changing the topic, “he’s on his way” Olamide replied, “you didn’t think I was going to let him ride in my car, did you?” she added confirming that my impression of her was in fact correct.
“I think I should get going now” I interjected, “you still haven’t given me your number” David replied. “Oh! I almost forgot” I said, “my phone screen is cracked but you can still punch in your number” he said, handing me his phone. “Of course” I replied, collecting his phone and punching my number. “Perfect! I’ll give you a call” he said after I handed his phone back to him.
“Please try to go to the hospital to get a tetanus shot” I advised. “What do I need that for? The bleeding has stopped” he asked looking puzzled. “Oh! The tetanus vaccine is not supposed to stop bleeding” I laughed, “It’s supposed to prevent you from getting infected with bacteria that causes tetanus” I explained.
“So why do I need it?” he asked, still looking puzzled. “It’s Okay, I’ll explain” I said with a smile.
“Tetanus is a bacterial infection that affects the nervous system. It causes the neck and jaw muscles to become stiff. The bacteria that causes tetanus can gain entrance into the body through deep cuts or puncture wounds exposed to soil or dirt, or, a foreign body such as nail or glass splinter or an infected umbilical cord, in the case of a baby of an unvaccinated mother.
A tetanus infection can lead to a variety of symptoms, some symptoms include difficulty swallowing or breathing, neck stiffness, muscle spasms, uncontrolled urination and pooping.
Tetanus has no cure, the symptoms will stop when the bacteria has run its course which usually takes a period of about 2-3 weeks. Doctors basically just give drugs and necessary treatment to manage the symptoms. The good news is that tetanus can be prevented with the tetanus vaccine and you only need to take it every 10 years” I explained.
“Wow! What a boring lecture” Olamide said rolling her eyes, “Please ignore her” David replied, “What you shared was very informative. I will definitely be going to get my tetanus shot after the mechanic arrives to sort this out” he said, pointing at the car.
“Once again, I’m really sorry about this” I apologised, “It’s not a problem” he replied, “at least I got to meet you again.”
And that was how I reconnected with my handsome stranger by a stroke of fate.
By the time I returned, Ugochi was mad as she had been waiting outside for hours. She had expected me to return as soon as I saw her message and I would have if it wasn’t for the unexpected events that had unfolded.
“That Rowland guy is an idiot” Ugochi fumed after I narrated what happened at the restaurant. “What does he really want?” she continued, “childhood sweetheart my ass. As if that is a valid excuse for cheating on you. He should go back to his sweetheart and leave you the hell alone” she added angrily.
Sigh! Ugochi always had my back, she was not the kind to let anyone mess with her friends or family, she was loyal to the core. I was glad to have her in my life. To be honest, friends like Ugochi are hard to find.
The following night, David called me and we spoke on the phone for hours. It’s not even like we planned to talk for so long but the conversation was so good that we ended up talking all night. He promised to also be at my graduation the following week, when I told him that my parents would be unavoidably absent because their first grandchild,my older brother’s son was due to be born around the same time and they would be travelling to the USA a few days to my graduation to spend time with his family.

Isn’t it funny how when grandkids start to come, the actual kids are no longer important? I mean, fancy them missing the graduation of a child that they have known for years just to meet a grandchild that doesn’t even exist yet.
The connection between David and I seemed to deepen with every passing conversation. We shared stories, laughed at each other’s jokes, and discovered common interests that made the conversations flow effortlessly. It was as if we had known each other for much longer than just a couple of days. And even though the prospect of him attending my graduation made my heart race with excitement, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment that my parents wouldn’t be able to share the special day with me.
The day of my graduation arrived, marked by a mixture of emotions swirling within me. The relief of completing my studies, the excitement of moving forward, and a touch of nostalgia for the years that had led me to this point. As the ceremony commenced, I sat among my fellow graduates, my heart racing with anticipation.
The dean of my faculty took the podium, delivering a heartfelt speech that resonated with all of us. As he spoke about the challenges we had overcome and the bright futures that awaited us, I felt a surge of pride in my accomplishments. But just as he was rounding up his speech, an unexpected interruption occurred.
There was a lot of shouting from the crowd behind me, turning everyone’s attention away from the stage. Confused and curious, I turned around to see what was causing the commotion. Up till this day, I still can’t recover from the shock of what befell my eyes.
