Dangerous Disguise – Episode 5

My heart raced as the situation escalated far beyond what I could have anticipated. The sound of shattering glass echoed in my ears, and my mind struggled to process the chaos that had erupted in a matter of seconds. David’s usually composed demeanour had transformed into a mixture of shock and anger, his face contorted as he glared at the shattered windscreen of his expensive car.

“You’ve just crossed a line you can’t uncross,” David said through gritted teeth, his voice carrying a dangerous edge.

I could feel the intensity in the air, and panic surged through me. Rowland had gone too far, and the consequences were spiralling out of control. A crowd was starting to gather around us, drawn by the commotion.

“Rowland, what the hell is wrong with you?” I shouted, my own anger beginning to boil over. “You’re way out of line!”

Rowland’s expression was twisted with a mix of triumph and defiance, as if he relished the chaos he had created. “You want him, Chioma? Well, you can have him and his damaged belongings” he sneered.

David took a step forward, his fists clenched, but I reached out and grabbed his arm, stopping him from escalating the situation further. “Don’t,” I whispered, my voice filled with desperation. “It’s not worth it.”

He turned to look at me, his eyes still blazing with anger, but gradually the fire in his gaze subsided. He took a deep breath and nodded, his features relaxing somewhat.

“You’re right,” he muttered, his voice low and controlled. He glanced at his damaged car once more before turning back to Rowland. “This isn’t over,” he warned, his voice laced with a promise that sent a chill down my spine.

With that, David turned and walked away, heading back to the driver’s side of his car, leaving a stunned crowd behind. He picked his phone and started dialling. I could hear him telling the person on the other end that he needed a ride and a mechanic as well. A mixture of admiration and concern stirred within me as I watched him. He was willing to walk away from a confrontation that could have turned violent, showing a strength of character that impressed me.

I turned to face Rowland, still very angry. “You need help, Rowland,” I said, my voice trembling with a mix of frustration and sadness. “I don’t know what happened to you, but this isn’t the person I used to know.”

Rowland’s gaze flickered with a hint of something resembling regret, but it was quickly replaced by his usual arrogance. “You think you’re better off without me, huh?” he retorted. “Well, good luck finding someone who’ll put up with you,” he added.

I shook my head, feeling a mix of emotions as I looked at the person I once cared about. “I deserve better, Rowland. And I won’t let you bring me down anymore.” I replied as he walked away leaving me behind.

I turned back to face David who had now finished his phone conversation, I noticed that one of his hands was bleeding. Apparently, while attempting to pick his phone from his car, one of the pieces of glass had pierced through his palms and hurt him, but he seemed to have a high threshold for pain as it appeared he was unmoved by it.

“Your hand is bleeding” I said pointing at his bleeding palms, “I noticed” he replied unbothered, as he bent back into his car and frantically searched for something. He reappeared a few seconds later with a cloth in his hand which he used to wipe the blood off his hand but the blood kept trickling down.
“You need to apply pressure” I said watching him try unsuccessfully to stop the bleeding, “how do you mean?” he asked, “press firmly on the cut for about 10-15 minutes and raise your hand above your heart to allow for hemostasis” I replied, “Hemostasis? What on earth is that?” he asked looking puzzled.
“I apologise for the confusion” I chuckled. “Hemostasis is simply a medical term for the process of blood clotting. It is the body’s natural reaction to an injury that causes bleeding. This reaction stops bleeding and allows your body to start repairs on the injury. This mechanism is essential to prevent major blood loss.” I explained.
“Look at you, sounding like a doctor” he laughed, “Well what can I say? In just a week from now, I will officially be conferred the Doctor of Medicine degree and from then, you can feel free to call me Dr. Chioma” I smiled. “ Oh wow! You’re a doctor?” he asked, looking surprised, his eyes lit up with excitement.
“Yes I am,” I replied proudly. I was proud of myself, proud of my achievements, proud of how far I had come, against all odds.  Like I said before, going through medical school was no piece of cake.
“Wow! A beauty with brains, that’s impressive” he replied nodding with a look of admiration in his eyes. “I guess that explains why you were at the club the other day,” he added.

“Well! Yes it does, after all the major theme that day was our ‘bye bye to med school party’ wasn’t it?” I asked, “not exactly” he replied shaking his head, “some of us were there because of Asake”
“Not you too” I replied, rolling my eyes as I narrated how I ended up being dragged to the party by Ugochi, all because of Asake, even though I so badly did not want to go.

A silver coloured Mercedes GLE-350 SUV pulled up right beside his vehicle interrupting our conversation, I noticed that it was the latest version. Yeah! I know it might sound weird that I know some of these things as a lady but I have a thing for cars and gadgets. Apart from being a doctor, I’m also a techy girl if I do say so myself.

A beautiful young lady dressed in a very short bodycon dress stepped out of the SUV walking towards us, her beauty was intimidating, her figure was a near perfect hourglass and she walked confidently with the pride of a peacock.

“Surely, she can’t be coming our way” I thought to myself already feeling somewhat intimidated, I mean it’s not like I’m ugly or something, I’m very pretty too, but this girl was definitely tough competition.

To my surprise and horror, she stopped right in front of us looking straight at David.
I wasn’t sure how to react, so I froze wondering who the hell she was and what she wanted.
