Old Enough Yet Unmarried – Episode 23

“What is wrong?” I asked again, waiting for a reply.
He paused for a while then looked at me and smiled, “You’re expecting a set of twins!” he announced.
“Are you serious?” I screamed, hugging him. I’d always dreamed of having twins since I was
a little girl—I had always imagined how I’d play dress up with them and make them look like
clones of each other. Now I couldn’t believe my dream was finally going to come true.
“Yes, I’m serious,” he replied grinning, “lie down and let me show you,” he said, turning the
screen towards me so I could see while he put the ultrasound probe on my belly.
I saw my twins looking so cute in black and white, I wished I could just pull them out and hug
them. That was the highlight of my day! I went home feeling happy and excited, it was time
to start baby shopping for my twins.
Yemi was still staying over at my place so I shared the news with her when I got home and
she was happy for me, or at least she pretended to be, because she had a lot on her mind.
Bayo still hadn’t shown up, his phones were still switched off and sugar mummy had started
sending threatening texts to Yemi’s phone because she believed Yemi knew his
whereabouts. How she even got her phone number still remains a mystery.

Two weeks later, Yemi finally got a call from Bayo with a hidden number. He apologised for
disappearing without telling her and started feeding her lies about how some people he did
business with were after his life and he had to go to Ibadan to hide so they wouldn’t find him.
He promised to return when they were no longer after his life and hung up without giving
Yemi a chance to speak. So much for being her husband, it was almost as if she was
married to a total stranger. What am I saying? Of course she was, with the recent
happenings I couldn’t guarantee that we knew who Bayo really was anymore.
Oby on the other hand, had gradually started to come to terms with the fact that Chuks was
dead, Charly told me when we talked on the phone that the first few days staying with her
was hell. Oby wouldn’t eat or drink anything and had refused to sleep because she kept
seeing Chuks crying out for help each time she closed her eyes and felt helpless that she
couldn’t do anything to save him.
She had been blaming herself for not convincing him to stay back a little longer. “Maybe if he
waited till Monday he wouldn’t have died,” she kept telling Charly.
“There’s nothing you could’ve done to save him dear, it was just his time to go,” Charly would
always say.
Oby eventually resigned from work. According to her, the job and every other thing around
her reminded her of Chuks and the longer she stayed around, the more she was losing her
mind. She and her mum thought it best that she went to the States to join her uncle and his
wife and start a new life. It was easy for her to do because all she needed were her
belongings, a plane ticket which she could comfortably afford since she came from a rich
family and an American passport which she already had.

I wished I could just wake up one day and decide to go to America like that too!
Unfortunately, I couldn’t because my parents were too busy lazing around when other
parents were giving birth to their children and getting American passports for them, so I’m
stuck with a green passport that requires answering a long series of questions just to get a
visa to travel.
We were all sad that she was leaving. It was like saying goodbye to a family member,
outings wouldn’t be the same without her but at the same time we were happy she had
finally decided to move on from the past and start a new life. She was scheduled to leave by
the end of that month so we decided to all hang out over the weekend for one last time
together.
We met at a seaside restaurant on the island that weekend and had an awesome time
together. We laughed so much that we forgot all our individual troubles.
Halfway through our get together, I announced to the girls that I would be having a set of
twins. They were all so excited they screamed,! Oby and Charly started battling, as usual,
over who would be the babies’ godmothers. “Babes, babes, babes,” I said, trying to quiet
them down. “I have enough babies to go round so you don’t need to struggle,” I said
laughing, “although Americana is going to have to be sending a lot of gifts to make up for her
absence,” I added. Everyone burst out into more laughter, then we made a toast to
friendship and drank. I’m sure the other guests at the restaurant were wondering why
grown-up women like us were so hyperactive… they probably even thought we were drunk
but we didn’t care, we were just happy.
After all the excitement and merriment, it was time to go home. “I have something I need to
share with you guys before we go,” Jumai suddenly announced with a serious look on her
face.
“What?” we all chorused, turning to face her. “What I’m about to say might come as a
shock,” she began, then paused and held her face in her hands.

“What is it?” I asked, urging her to talk. I hated that she was keeping us in suspense, I didn’t
like suspense.
What did she want to say and why was it taking her so long to say it? Was she about to spoil
the fun with unpleasant news? Did someone die again? Was Abdul asking for a divorce?
My mind began to wander, I began to think of all the things she could possibly want to tell
us…
