Old Enough Yet Unmarried – Episode 22

I stopped by the nearest police station I found on my way to Yemi’s house to report the incident and get some policemen to come with me. By the time we reached the house, I began to wish I hadn’t even bothered myself.
I had expected to see a young, vibrant lady causing havoc, instead I was greeted by a woman in her late 40s ready for a fight.

Apparently, she was Bayo’s sugar mummy who he had been dating for over 5 years. She had relocated to the United Kingdom with her children shortly after her billionaire husband
died leaving behind numerous properties for her and their children. She usually came home every 6 months to inspect his property and oversee some of his businesses and it was on one of her numerous trips to Nigeria that she met Bayo and fell in love with him.
Bayo was just an ordinary hustler when they met; he could hardly make ends meet but trust him to step up his game when he found a maga (nigerian slang for wealthy fool) .

He made her fall so deeply in love with him that she spoiled him with gifts, including the house he was currently living in and all the cars he owned. She also put him in charge of running the affairs of one of her late husband’s businesses and he was supposed to give monthly feedback to her on the day-to-day running of the business pending when she was in the country to seet hings for herself.

According to her, in the last few months, Bayo had suddenly become elusive and started avoiding her calls and making excuses for not calling back. I’m guessing this must’ve been after he met Yemi. She said she started becoming suspicious and had planned to investigate further during her next visit only for a friend of hers to call to say she heard that Bayo had just got married. The news prompted her to start making arrangements to return immediately and she flew into the country on the next available flight.
Everything began to make sense to me. I now understood why Bayo proposed to Yemi barely 3 months after they met—he had probably noticed she was rich and desperate to get married and thought to secure the new “maga” with marriage. That would also explain why
he constantly cheated on her, even a few hours before he proposed and was flirting on their wedding day. He also was never bothered that Yemi stuttered on the altar because all he wanted to do was ensure he tied her down with marriage.

No wonder he had refused to
show up at the house that night.
Everything made perfect sense. I apologised to the policemen and told them it was okay to return to the station. It was obvious we were fighting a lost battle—the real owner of the
house was back for it and the bitter truth was that Bayo actually owned nothing!
I felt so bad for Yemi, I could tell that her marriage to Bayo was going to be a nightmare but I just never imagined it would be this bad. I wish she had listened to me earlier.

Sugar mummy made it clear to us that she had come back to collect everything she owned from Bayo, down to the last penny and was willing to involve the police if Bayo didn’t comply.
I need not tell you that Yemi wasn’t allowed to take anything out of the house that night, poor girl! She ended up sleeping at my place and eventually had no other choice than to stop
giving me the silent treatment.

She swallowed her pride and apologised to me before we went to bed, saying that she just realised I was actually looking out for her and that she regretted not listening to me.
Bayo’s phone remained switched off for the rest of the night,so we concluded that he must’ve gone into hiding after realising he had been busted.
Two weeks passed and there was still no word from Bayo; Yemi was slowly beginning to let go.
I, on the other hand, had other things to worry about—my pregnancy had started showing and people were beginning to ask questions and make silly remarks like “you didn’t tell me
you were expecting a baby,” and “how come I was never invited for the wedding?”
Geez! I honestly didn’t realise I had to organise a press conference just to announce my pregnancy.
I decided to register at the antenatal clinic. I was about 20 weeks gone and it was long overdue, I knew I should have done that earlier but I’d just been too busy.

By the way, being too busy is not an excuse for not booking your first appointment at an antenatal clinic—you can always ask for time off work, it’s very important for you or your wife
as the case may be and your baby.
Every pregnant woman should be booked at the antenatal clinic any time between the 8th and 12th week of pregnancy and attend the clinics regularly so that appropriate screening
tests can be done and any health issues with mum or the baby are detected early enough and can be addressed. Attending antenatal clinic appointments also helps pregnant women to be better prepared for labour and pregnancy and know what to expect and do at each stage. So next time you see a pregnant woman, tell her to book an appointment at anantenatal clinic if she hasn’t done so yet.

I decided to register at a clinic in a different hospital from where I worked just for privacy
reasons, but, unfortunately for me, the doctor who happened to be attending to me turned
out to be a former colleague—just my luck! I guess a goldfish truly has no hiding place.
“It’s so good to see you Tess, I didn’t know you were married now,” he said smiling.
“No I’m not,” I replied, sticking my tongue out.
“Oh!” he said, looking embarrassed and confused at the same time.
“It’s okay I’m used to that reaction,” I said trying to break the ice.
We went about the normal antenatal booking routine of taking my information, calculating my
expected date of delivery (EDD), expected gestational age (EGA) (which is the length of the
pregnancy in weeks) and requesting some blood tests. I also needed to do a dating
ultrasound scan. Usually this is done when you book at the antenatal clinic and it is used to
estimate the EDD; it is usually more accurate than calculating with dates but that’s only when
the scan is done earlier on in the pregnancy during the first trimester. Now you know one
more reason it’s important to book on time.
“Please lie down,” he said pointing to the examination table as I took my shoes off, lying on
my back and raising my blouse up to my chest as he began scanning. He had barely even
scanned for up to a minute when he suddenly shouted, “Oh my gosh!”
“What is the matter?” I asked jumping up, different things had started going through my
head—was there something wrong with the baby? Did he see anything abnormal? Or worse
still, was my baby dead?
My heart began racing as I waited to hear his response. I was already blaming myself for not
booking at the clinic at the right time.
I’d heard enough bad news in the last few months to last me a lifetime… The last thing I
needed was another one to add to the list…
