Oh! it’s Monday morning and it’s the harmattan season again. This season brings along with it lots of memories. I have seen a lot and have learnt a lot too. I am a survivor and I am just fortunate to tell this story. I hope we all learn from this story. The harmattan season brings so much fears and tears to me and in as much as I love this season I wish these memories would go away.
It all started two years ago
I had just returned to Nigeria after my university education in Canada and had done my compulsory one year service to my father land, as a way to make my parents happy. Well I’m from a rich background and I’m the only boy among 3 children and the second child in the family. My dad is an oil worker while my mom is a proud owner of the second largest shopping mall in the country. We live in Banana island, a place only the affluent could afford and everyone one of us had the opportunity to school outside the country.
Yes we went to any school of our choice. I practically had anything I wanted and had enough money to buy anything I needed. On returning to the country my dad gifted me a car, the latest Mercedes C-class. I was celebrated and I could remember vividly the governor of Lagos state along with some distinguished senators attending that party. That was the first time I had a one on one meeting with Tu face who was paid to come perform in my party. I always had so much love for that music legend. That party ran late into the night with some comedians making us laugh so loud.
Something else happened that night. My dad’s friend who happened to be a senator came along with her beautiful daughter by name Amanda. Amanda was a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago where she studied law and also obtained her masters and was planning on having her PhD there too. She had passion for fashion and owned a large and reputable fashion empire which houses some of the biggest fashion names in the country. Surprisingly she is just 22. She came along with her dad looking so beautiful that night.
I must confess I was attracted to her at first sight, maybe because I don’t believe in love at first sight. But I had to control myself so as not to show that I was already tripping. As if it was already planned out my dad gestured to me to come say hello to the senator and his daughter. I left my sisters and moved to where dad and the senator were seated. “Goodevening senator” I said to the senator while lowering my head as a sign of respect. “Goodevening my son” he replied with a broad smile on his face. Then her daughter stretched out her right hand in a bid to get my attention and as a gentle man I held her hand and said “Hello beautiful” while trying to stress the fulllllll… She smiled as she squeezed my fingers with some kind of softness… The she replied “hello handsome” and she stood up to give me a hug. My dad and her dad smiled as they watched us and before I could say anything they stood up and left us to ourselves. I sat with her and we got talking.
The manner at which she spoke was more like an angel from the heavens, her intonation could send the birds to sleep and her smile made my heart melt… I kept saying to myself “oh my God, she is just perfect”… Then she held up her wine cup with her left hand and as she took a sip from it her lips looked so soft and it left a beautiful painting on the mouth of the cup. I was lost. Then at that moment Tu face stepped on the stage to perform African queen and she took my hands and guided me to the dance floor. We danced slowly while I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I was so caught up in the moment that I didn’t hear when my dad and his guest were calling out to me to come give a vote of thanks. She had to tap me before I came back to reality and walked to where dad was. I took the mic and with my eyes fixed on her I delivered a sterling speech
“I want to say a big thank to all for honoring this invitation to Come celebrate with myself and my family today. The love and care would never leave my heart. I can’t mention all the names but I thank everyone from the senators to the comedians and musicians. I am glad to be back home and I’ll be staying around for sometime. Nigeria is a great country and have great minds like everyone here. I will be happy to contribute to the peace and success that already exist here. Thank you dad and mom and my wonderful family for putting this up for me. I really appreciate ”
I came down from the stage and was greeted by a lot of guests at the occasion. Although I tried to keep an eye on Amanda I couldn’t meet her again because we were so busy meeting and catching up with a lot of guests and friends at the event. I returned home feeling so tired and was so surprised to see text messages from a strange number. I called the number and a voice said “hey dear, it’s me Amanda. Sorry I left without seeing you again and so I had to get your number from your younger sister. We Will talk tomorrow dear. Sleep well Mr handsome”…
I slept with a smile on my face…
Hang on for the next Episode….

I like this beginning mostly where Mr Handsome says “the manner at which she spoke was more like an angel from heaven, her intonation could send the birds to sleep and her smile made my heart melt” 🤓🤓
I hope it favours them like Dave and Amelia.
