It’s Monday morning again and it’s the harmattan season. This season brings along with it alot of memories. I’ve learnt alot and I am a survivor. This season brings alot of fears and tears with it. It was during this same harmattan season and on a Monday that I met Amara and it is this same season that I lost her. Living without Amara is more like living an unfulfilled and empty life because without her I won’t be here.
I am back from the hospital and I’m recovered and on my feet again. I was not able to attend Amara’s burial because she was buried immediately she died, not even up to a week after she died. My dad and mom said they made it to her burial. I can’t stay in Nigeria any longer because it reminds me alot of Amara. I was with Amara’s family two days ago and I told them that I’ll be relocating to Canada for sometime and I wish to do my masters and PhD in the same school. I told them that i needed to take my mind off alot of things for a long time. My sweet cousin sister was with me all through my last moment in Nigeria. She kept encouraging me :”I’ll miss you my sweetest bro. I’ve learnt alot from you and in happy we spent some time together. I always love you bro and I won’t disappoint you”…
As for me I’ve also learnt alot too. Some days ago Amanda came visiting and apologizing for everything she had put me through. She told me how difficult it is for her to love someone else and she swore to be very patient and understanding with me this time : “I discussed with my dad and we both agreed to be patient with you. So you can take your time and go do your masters okay. I’ll do what I can here while I wait for you.”…she doesn’t know I am not planning to return for a long time. I didn’t even answer her because I am still mourning my Amara.
You see this thing they call love, it is mysterious. You can never understand how it works.

That person you don’t expect to show love is the person that will even go an extra mile to do so. Look at Amara, a poor child and a girl with so much dreams and aspirations is gone because she sacrificed her life for me. True love is putting others ahead of you. This I’ve come to learn. I don’t think I’ll be able to love anyone again in this life. I’ll live for Amara all the days of my life. Her mom gave me Amara’s neckless and I wore it round my neck as a sign that she lives in me.
Well I’m all packed up and ready to move. The senator calls me and wishes me a safe journey while Amanda calls me to apologize for her inability to follow me to the airport. Amara’s mom and family are doing well for themselves. All thanks to my dad who made sure they are well taken care of. He got them a new and comfortable place and got Amara’s mom a bigger supermarket while he had Amara’s siblings go to the best of schools. What a way to make up for the loss of their sister. Even as I was leaving I called my family to thank them for everything and they promised to meet me at the airport. I drove to the airport at about 10am because my flight to Canada was booked for 12pm. While I was sitting at the airport someone tapped me on my shoulders from behind and I turned to see who it was.
Can you believe who I saw? Can you believe? I couldn’t believe my eyes when I turned and saw Amara. I nearly ran away. I stood up and was about to run when my dad and mom and sisters and cousin sister all showed up at the same time behind her with all smiles. I don’t believe what I’m seeing and just then Amara’s mom held me from the back and smiled and said “don’t be scared my son. This is the same Amara and she is alive. She didn’t die”… My dad cuts in : “my son I’m sorry for everything I’ve put you through. I’m sorry for not believing in you. I’m sorry for making life difficult for you.
But I’m glad I had to learn and make amends before it became too late. I discovered that true love is all that matters. Amara you’re seeing here is not dead. She survived the surgery but we had to put up the act pretending she was dead so that the senator and his daughter would get off our backs. We asked the doctor to inject her and he also covered her as if she was dead. That way we were able to move her to the doctor’s house that night. She has been there with the doctor and his family for about two months recovering. We also prepared her visa and got her an admission to pursue her university education in the same School you’re going to. So she is traveling with you and with the help of your cousin sister we booked her flight the same time with yours. You can get married over there and start your lives.”… I was still shocked and my mom spoke up :” my sweet son, we are truly sorry for everything. We have seen what true love is. Amara came to the hospital when Amanda left us.
The senator and your dad had gone out to seek for solutions. It was your cousin sister that recognized her. She agreed to give one of her kidneys because she can’t bear to see you like that. And so we agreed to keep it a secret. The surgery was successful but your cousin sister came up with a plan before the end of the surgery and i and my husband agreed to it. That is why the senator brought Amara’s mom and siblings out of the cell.”…
Ijay my best friend just came in and ran to give me a big hug. She said “bestie everything was a plan. We were told that Amara was gone. We were brought to the hospital and we all cried. Later that night I and Amara’s mom were taken to the doctor’s house to see Amara and we were told of the plan to keep it a secret”… Amara’s mother nodded in affirmation to all that was said. She then added “you can travel with her and I give you my blessings. It will go well with you my son and my daughter. Don’t worry yourself about the senator, we will handle him”… I started crying as well as Amara.
We hugged ourselves so tight as if squeezing the life out of us and I kissed her right in front of everyone there. Then my little cousin sister said “bro I told you that you’ll smile at the end. Pls take care of Amara” and she started crying. I then saw the doctor. I saw every one. I didn’t expect this kind of end to everything that has happened. My sister then handed me a small box and asked me to do the needful. I opened the box and saw a ring and I looked at my my dad. He smiled in agreement. I looked at Amara’s mom and she smiled too. I then knelt down and popped up the question right there in the airport “will you marry me?” and before I could finish she hugged me and sealed it with a kiss “yes I will”…
Just then our flight was announced and together we moved to Canada…
“true love knows no barrier…it lasts forever”…
