On getting home we were greeted to this large family all waiting for us as if I’ve committed the worst crime on earth. The news went round that the only son of Gburugburu had rescued a poor widow and had bought her a new home. News spread faster than anything and it was no surprise that my dad and mom were getting calls from so called well meaning friends to ascertain the level of truth of the news they were hearing.
Everyone was already seated in the sitting room waiting for My arrival as if I was to grant a press conference. On entering the house my mom was the first to speak up and she went in hot… “how dare you? So you have too much money right? After all my advice you had the guts to rent them a house. So you’re doing that because of a girl. I was told you even went shopping with her. I think you’ve…” and just then my dad cuts in “let me have the car keys…” and then he calls my friend who helped me secure the house for Amara and her family “hello Sam, I learnt you showed my son the house he rented for that family right?
I’ll need you to take me to that house”… And then he calls my accountant and orders him to freeze my account. Then my elder sister faces my little cousin sister and says “… And you stupid girl, you refused to go to school today. Your teacher called the house to tell us you weren’t in school…”… Mom continues “from now on you would just follow me to the shopping mall and your dad would be dropping your cousin off at school… I stood still and couldn’t even utter a single word. It was unbelievable. My dad angrily went to his room and so did my mom and my sisters. I and my little cousin sister sat down staring at each other. How could such a wonderful day turn out this way at the end.
I expected to be treated like a hero. I expected to be given a standing ovation. But here I was treated as a criminal and all my benefits taken away just because I helped out a poor family. As if what I was going through at the moment wasn’t enough torment for me, Amanda walks in. She had come all the way to my house that night just to add salt to injury. She came into our sitting room and asked my little cousin sister to leave us immediately and then she fired “now I am ashamed of you, you of all people would stoop so low to involve yourself with that poor and wretched family all because of that stupid good for nothing girl. I am really disappointed in you.

Well for your info I’ll be staying here with your family for some time to monitor your activities and we’ll go places together. I think I’m being too lenient with you and that has given you the opportunity to go around with that poor thing “… Then she moves her things to my younger sister’s room. I quickly ran to mom’s room to ask if she knew about Amanda’s coming and she said “I invited her to come spend some time with us here… Do you have any issues with that”… It’s unbelievable… How can my family treat me this way…my account has been frozen, my car seized and my movements under scrutiny… This is not life… I went to my room confused and very angry.
The next day my dad and Sam the estate manager went to the house i rented for them to drive them away. I got a text message from Amara saying “your dad just drove us out of the house. Thanks for caring and for showing us love too. I’ll never forget you in this life. We will be heading back to our village and we will be just fine. Take care of yourself and remember I love you”… I stood looking so lost. I turned to look at how mom and Amanda were smiling at each other. I thought of what to do but ran out of ideas. I decided to take a huge risk.
I did it for love. Since my family is not in support of anything that concerns me I can stand up to the challenges myself. I asked to go use the rest room and so I moved out and with the little money I had in my pocket I took a quick drop to the island to see what really was happening. To my utmost surprise Amara and her family were outside the house. So my dad had the mind to carry out this wicked plan? Amara’s mom could not hold her tears back. I sat there crying with them. Besides I couldn’t make any withdrawals. So I went to ask my best friend miss Ijeoma to help me accommodate them. And she did agree to accommodate them. Ijeoma has always been of help in times like this and she is someone I can’t do without. She also agreed to get Amara a menial job in her friend’s supermarket so that she can use the small money to take care of her mom and siblings.
My parents have done alot to make me cry and so I decided it was time I became a man. That day when I got home I called my dad and mom and everyone in the house together and said to them “I want to thank you all for everything you’ve done for me since my return from abroad. I now wish to leave my family house to stay on my own and I now wish to get a job of my own where I can make my own money and control my spending. Dad you can have the car you bought me. I’ll work hard and get myself another car.
I’m sorry for also doing what I did for that poor family. Since they’ve returned to their village I’ll like to start up on a new page and run my life “… My dad smiled and said ” so that family had a village and they were here struggling to live in the city. Well you can now have the new house I bought in your name and the car too. I only did what I had to do so that you can come back to your senses and I’m glad you’ve done so now ” and my mom added “you’re the son of a multi millionaire and should live like one. We didn’t want you to go astray and so we had to be difficult so that you’ll see that we mean well for you”… Everyone was happy because they thought Amara and her family were out of the way.
At least that is what I wanted them to believe. Amanda smiled and came to sit with me. She felt that her moving in to stay with us was the reason I realized my mistakes. We had dinner like one happy family. Sometimes it doesn’t depend on how hard we want to fight but how smart we have chosen to fight. I was determined to be smart. Amanda left our family house the next day and I drove my little cousin to the school as usual that morning. As she alighted from the car she gave me a big hug and whispered right into my ears “brother you’re The smartest bro I’ve ever known. Even without you saying a word I know you’ve done the best thing for Amara and her family” and she left with a peck on my cheek. I was left in thoughts “how did she know I’ve done the best for Amara and her family”….
