The Dilapidated condition of the New Abiola National Stadium (Images)

There must be something seriously wrong with the maintainance culture in Nigeria. It becomes even more worrisome when it carries that emblem of NATIONAL identity.

The erstwhile National stadium in Lagos is now a den for rogues and a shadow of itself since the national figure was stripped from it.

Years later, President Obasanjo constructed a state of the art stadium in Abuja which becomes the new National stadium. It was such a beautiful edifice to behold and hosted an international competition.

The 60,000 capacity stadium gulped about $360M to construct. Few years down the line, it was totally abandoned and forgotten.

What really happened?

Recently, President Buhari renamed the stadium after the late MKO Abiola on the democracy day celebration.

However, the national stadium is in such a big mess due to long term abandonment.
