Save Us – Episode 5

“oh mommy, why did you have us like that… I didn’t even have a chance to save you… I’m so sorry for letting you die… I wish I could do something to help you stay alive…
Mommy : yes you can… Just make sure your sister stays alive”

And just then my brother tapped me and I woke up. I didn’t know I have been dreaming all this while and yet it looked so real. I was talking with mom and then I started to cry. I really miss my mom so much and just then I heard a gun shot and I and my brother got up and headed for the bus where the children were all lying to check if they were safe. As we entered they told us that one of them was so hungry and had to leave when we were asleep to go get food from the market place.

I and my brother became so scared and then the gun shots became more intense and we all got up and came out. I instructed them to bend and lie low and they followed my instruction. It was 1am and it was still very dark. We didn’t have any form of light and so we Just had to lay low. then we saw from a distance someone running with full speed. On a closer look it happened to be that little boy that had gone to get some food. He had some loaves of bread with biscuits and sachet water. He was running and these things were too much for him alone to carry and we were still contemplating how we could be of help to him and just then we saw the enemies with torchlights and guns following after him and shooting.

But the bullets did not seem to be getting to him and he was still running but the things he was carrying were beginning to fall off and his strength was beginning to fail him. He fell at a point and was trying to stand up but the things he was carrying won’t let him and the enemies were getting closer. We all stood up and tried to run to him to help him because it was clear that he won’t get to us again and so we ran to him but I guess that was our undoing… That was our biggest mistake. Our mistake was that we tried to help our friend and so when we all ran out as inexperienced children to help our friend they enemies then opened fire on all of us.

They didn’t know we were this much, they only chasing after the poor boy who had gone to get some food for himself and the other children. We fell like the grasses in the field… Yes before my very eyes I saw these children drop dead one after the other and I could do nothing about it… But we were determined to save that young lad and so we ran to him before the enemies could get to him and we took him up and started running back but this time we kept dying in our tens…

I kept shouting as would a commander in the army do to his squad “fall back… Keep running and don’t stop… Don’t separate yourselves… Run together” and so we held our hands tight and although we kept falling we never left ourselves, we kept running together… As we headed north we then saw another batch of the enemies coming in that direction and we were face to face with them and then I shouted to them “take your left” and so like a Flock of sheep we steered to the left and as we tried to run we saw them again and so we turned to the only available route which happens to be the right and we kept running.

It was a dead end for us but what could we do. As we ran I looked into my brother’s eyes and I saw hope. He said “brother incase I don’t make it pls save this children and especially this girl” while pointing to a very little girl who he was holding also… I told him to shut his mouth and we kept running. We were outnumbered and that road led to no where and as I turned I saw bullets and I saw children falling… Oh lord! SAVE US I cried looking up to heaven.

God saw my tears and just then a truck showed up right in front of us. Can you imagine! We didn’t want to know who it was that was driving this truck but we all jumped in and as I turned to see who was behind the wheels I saw my dad… Can you imagine I saw my dad… I thought he was dead but he had survived the butchering and had serious cuts all over him. He had a big cut on the side of his stomach and as I was still shocked at seeing my dad I heard a shout and turned towards that direction to see that the little girl my brother was holding was already shot…

We tried to get to them and my dad immediately tried to move the truck but the shooting was too much. My brave little brother carried the little girl (almost his size) and ran towards us and as he helped her onto the truck my brother got shot… Then he got shot again and again and again and then fell down. I tried to reach for his hands and our fingers touched but he looked me in the eyes and said “remember your promise”. I shouted and asked my dad to stop but he drove away. We were only 5 kids in the truck. As the truck drove away I could see my brother lying helplessly on the ground…

He looked at me from afar… The enemies got close to him and shot him again… I tried to come down from the truck but the other kids won’t let me… My brother was dead and gone just like that… When will this end.. My tears won’t stop…

It was already past 4am and my dad’s injury was beginning to tell on him. How he managed to survive is something I couldn’t explain. He has lost a lot of blood and couldn’t drive again. He stopped the truck abruptly and opened the door and fell off the truck to the ground… We all came down and rallied round him but I could see death all over him … God had actually sent him to rescue us… I saw his cuts and then braced myself up for the worst…

We tried to lift him but he refused… He said he had been looking for us and was happy to see my face before he would die. He showed us the road to the next community and fortunately for us we were close. My dad said “I have tried but I can’t go on any longer”. At this he removed the cloth he had used to tie up the big cut and I could see his intestine coming out. I tried to turn my face away and he held me saying “be a man and lead this children to the promised land… I’ve paid my dues” and then he pushed me away. He asked me to take the children and be gone… “I said leave now” he shouted to me as I tried to hold him “leave I say will you”… I stood up and then left with the other children…

Tears refused to fall from my eyes this time and my heart became as hard as a rock… I looked back and saw my dad lie there… My dad and my younger brother all gone in 45 minutes… If you can survive this then you’re no human… I was no human…I was numb… I was just bent on looking for my sister and I knew I would find her… “dad I’m sorry I couldn’t do anything to help” I said to myself as I walked in front of the children leading them like Moses…

Hang on for the Final Episode…
