Ex-Officer Derek Chauvin Charged With Murder in George Floyd’s Death

Degrees of murder

Fired Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman announced Friday afternoon.

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner announced it has made “no physical findings that support a diagnosis of traumatic asphyxia or strangulation.” The preliminary results of the May 26 autopsy were included in the statement of probable cause for charges against Chauvin. The medical examiner suggested underlying health conditions contributed to Floyd’s death. Floyd’s family said it will seek an independent autopsy.

The charges were the fastest the county attorney’s office has ever brought against an officer, said Michael Freeman, the Hennepin County Attorney. Derek Chauvin, 44, who was fired Tuesday in the wake of video showing his treatment of Mr. Floyd, was arrested and in custody.

Mr. Freeman said his office was still investigating the other three officers involved in the incident and that he anticipated charges, but felt it important to handle Mr. Chauvin’s case first. “I am not insensitive to what’s happened in the streets. My own home has been picketed regularly,” he said.
