Dangerous Disguise – Episode 38

“Babe, why did you do it?” I asked, my eyes filled with tears, “you lied to me” I added.
“Lied about what?” David asked, looking confused.
“About being an undercover detective. You kidnapped that young lady” I shouted.

David’s eyes widened, a mixture of shock and disbelief washing over his face. The weight of my accusation hung in the air, and for a moment, the room seemed to hold its breath.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” David finally stammered, his voice betraying a hint of nervousness.

“Don’t lie to me now. I saw it on the news. They’re looking for you in connection to the kidnapping.” I replied.

He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture that usually signalled his discomfort. “Chioma, you have to believe me. I’m not a kidnapper. I have no idea how I got involved in this mess.”

I couldn’t ignore the turmoil in his eyes, a conflict that mirrored the storm inside me. Despite the gravity of the situation, a small part of me desperately wanted to believe him, to cling to the hope that this was all a terrible mistake.

“Then explain it to me. Explain why your picture is on the news in connection to a crime,” I urged, my voice trembling with a mix of anger, fear, and confusion.

David hesitated, searching for words that seemed to elude him. The silence stretched, punctuated only by the distant sounds of the hospital.

“I… I’m sorry,” he finally admitted, his gaze dropping to the floor.

“I’m sorry I lied to you” he said dropping to his knees, “I fell in love with you and I was too ashamed to tell you the truth about myself, I was too scared to lose you. Chioma, I love you with all my heart. With everything inside of me. You’re my life. I swore to always protect you and our daughter and that hasn’t changed. Please forgive me” he begged.

I could see his eyes starting to get teary, “This was supposed to be our last Gig but somehow, things didn’t go as planned. I was supposed to stop for good. That’s why I didn’t bother to mention it to you, because I knew it was going to be in my past.” he explained further,

“Hewuuu” my mum shouted, putting her hands on her head as a sign of doom, “You have killed me o. David, you have finally killed me. What do I tell my husband now?” she wailed.

I was too confused, I didn’t know what to believe anymore. I could see the sincerity in David’s eyes, I knew he wasn’t lying about it being his last. I knew he had lied to protect me. But I could not bring myself to come to terms with the fact that I was married to a kidnapper. His face was all over the news, it was only a matter of time before friends and family would start to reach out to find out what was going on.

I wanted to probe him further, to question him, to shout at him, to scream, but then the mild contractions that I had been having since my water broke were becoming more intense and I could no longer bear the pain. The contractions were definitely real. They were different from the Braxton Hicks contractions that I had experienced earlier in my pregnancy.

Braxton Hicks contractions are false contractions that are felt during pregnancy. Unlike real contractions, they are painless, irregular, less intense and usually go away if you change positions. They typically last less than 30 seconds and never get more intense unlike in the case of real contractions. They may begin in the second or third trimester.
Braxton Hicks contractions feel like tightness in the abdomen, you may notice that your bump feels a little more firm than usual. Some women experience Braxton Hicks contractions, while others don’t. The exact cause of these types of contractions is not clear, but it is believed to be your body’s way of preparing for labour, although, they are definitely not a sign of labour.

Another strong contraction hit me and I screamed from the pain. David and my mum instantly went into panic mode. For a second, we all forgot about the shocking revelation of David’s kidnapping that had befallen us and swung into action.

“Baby, we need to get you to the hospital now,” David said, lifting me into his arms, a sense of urgency etched on his face. My mother, panic-stricken, followed closely behind as we rushed towards the car. The night air was cool, but my body was on fire with the intensity of the contractions. The pain was almost unbearable, but the revelation about David’s alleged involvement in the kidnapping case lingered in the back of my mind.

As David carefully placed me in the car, I winced, gripping the edge of the seat. My mother hurriedly climbed into the back, offering words of encouragement amid the chaos. The engine roared to life, and we sped through the dimly lit streets towards the hospital. Each jolt of the car intensified the contractions, and I fought to keep my composure.

Between gasps and breaths, I couldn’t shake the fear that someone might recognize David at the hospital. The consequences of that recognition loomed over me like a dark cloud. I turned to David, my voice strained but urgent, “We can’t risk going to the hospital, David. They might recognize you, and it could lead to trouble.”

David’s brow furrowed with concern. He glanced at my mother, who shared a worried look. “But Chioma, we can’t have the baby in the car. It’s not safe,” he replied, his eyes searching for a solution in the midst of my labour pains.

“We can’t risk you being recognized at the hospital.” I repeated, “It could lead to your arrest,” I explained, the weight of the situation evident in my eyes. “And with the kind of handsome reward for whistleblowers, anyone who somehow associates me with you, will call the police. It’s too risky for any of us to be seen in public now.” I explained in between pants and screams of agony.

“So what do we do?” David asked, beginning to see reason with me, he had been so concerned about me, that he didn’t even realise he was putting himself at risk of being caught.

Another contraction hit me and it was like my whole body was on fire. “I DON’T KNOW BABE, JUST DO SOMETHING.”  I screamed.
