Dangerous Disguise – Episode 34

David’s expression hardened, his jaw clenching. “Joyce, I won’t let you ruin my wedding. I suggest you leave NOW,” he said, his voice firm but controlled.

But Joyce was undeterred. She turned to me, her eyes narrowing with disdain. “You think he loves you? He’s just settling, trying to fit into some conventional mould that society has created. But deep down, his heart belongs to me.”

I felt a mix of anger and humiliation, my wedding day marred by this unexpected intrusion. The guests watched in stunned silence as the confrontation unfolded, the atmosphere growing heavy with tension. I wanted to react, to drag her by her hair and fling her into one of the palm trees, but I tried my best to keep calm. I wasn’t going to let her ruin the memory of my wedding day. There was no way I was rolling in the mud with this pig.

David took a step forward, his voice unwavering. “Joyce, I am marrying Chioma because I love her, and I want to spend my life with her. It’s time for you to move on and leave me and my wife alone.”

“She’s not your wife” Joyce retorted, “Maybe not yet, but she will be in a matter of minutes.” David replied.

Luckily, Femi stepped forward to intervene. He had been holding himself back but clearly could not continue to watch Joyce make a mess of his best friend’s wedding. He lifted Joyce onto his shoulders and carried her away walking briskly while Joyce continued to hit on his back, yelling for him to put her down.

“I apologise for that interruption” the officiant announced, clearing his throat, it was obvious that he was trying to hide his embarrassment. “I hope we can now proceed” he said looking suspiciously at David, “Yes please. Go ahead” David replied.

With Joyce removed from the scene, the atmosphere shifted back to one of anticipation and celebration. The officiant cleared his throat once more, trying to regain his composure, before continuing with the ceremony.

David and I exchanged our vows, pledging our love, loyalty, and devotion to each other.
As the officiant pronounced us husband and wife, our guests erupted into applause, their faces lit up with genuine happiness. David and I exchanged smiles, our hearts filled with overwhelming joy and gratitude.

The night continued with extravagance and celebration. David and his friends, in high spirits, continued to indulge in lavish gestures. They sprayed dollar bills into the air, raining money on the dance floor. Our guests eagerly collected the scattered bills, adding to the joyous atmosphere of the evening. Champagne flowed freely, with bottles of the finest and rarest varieties being popped open.

As the night wore on, a grand display of fireworks illuminated the sky, casting vibrant colours over the ocean. The night eventually drew to a close, but the memories of our beachside wedding would be in our hearts forever.

In the quiet moments that followed, David and I stood by the water’s edge, the waves gently lapping at the shore. We looked into each other’s eyes, knowing that we had embarked on a journey that was bound to be extraordinary. As the night continued, I started to feel very cold and began to shiver like someone suffering from cold intolerance, so we headed back to our suite with our hearts full of dreams and anticipation for the beautiful future that lay ahead.

Cold intolerance is extreme sensitivity to cold temperatures. It is more severe than the normal feeling of chilliness you get on a cold or windy day.

People who have little body fat or health conditions like hypothyroidism, anaemia or anorexia, are more prone to cold intolerance.

People with cold intolerance usually complain of being cold when others around are comfortable or even too warm. Adding extra layers of clothing may not relieve this feeling of being cold.

People experiencing cold intolerance should see a doctor for proper evaluation if the problem of feeling cold persists as it is usually a sign of an underlying medical condition. The treatment of cold intolerance will depend on the cause.

Returning to Nigeria marked the beginning of our shared life as a married couple. My father who eventually got to find out about our wedding refused to speak to me for weeks, his disapproval of my marriage to David was evident in his silence. His absence in my life created an ache that seemed to seep into every corner of my heart. Meanwhile, my mother, torn between her loyalty to my father and her love for me, paid occasional visits, attempting to bridge the gap between us. In the midst of this emotional turmoil, David remained my steadfast support.

I had decided that I was not going to start work until after my baby was born. I was due in less than a month, my friends in their usual fashion, organised a baby shower for me with my friends and family in attendance. Ugochi had also invited some of her family members who were close to me as well.

The day of the baby shower arrived, and our living room was transformed into a haven of pastel colours and decorations. Balloons adorned the walls, and a banner with the words “Welcome Baby!” hung across the room. The air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers and the sound of laughter as friends and family gathered to celebrate the upcoming arrival of our little one.

Ugochi had outdone herself with the organisation, ensuring that every detail was perfect. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with fairy lights twinkling overhead and soft music playing in the background. The excitement in the room was contagious as everyone eagerly awaited the moment when I would pop the gender reveal balloons to reveal the baby’s gender.

The doorbell rang, Ugochi hurried to answer it. When she returned, she was accompanied by her aunt, who had recently been the victim of a kidnapping. She brought her over to say hello to David and I but something strange caught my attention, when they walked in.
Ugochi’s aunt reacted in a very weird manner when she saw David. Her eyes widened with fear, and she visibly trembled, taking a step back as if trying to distance herself from him. It was a reaction I couldn’t comprehend, especially considering the festive atmosphere of the baby shower.

As Ugochi and I exchanged puzzled glances, her aunt quickly excused herself, claiming she was feeling unwell, but I could tell that she was lying. I couldn’t shake off the feeling that something significant was happening beneath the surface, something that involved not just Ugochi’s aunt but also David and I was determined to find out what it was.
