I arrived at Doreenda Cafe the next day, my heart pounding with both anticipation and unease. The message had left me with more questions than answers, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was amiss. Still, I hoped it was a message from David, a chance to finally clear the air between us.
Noon came, and I scanned the cafe’s parking lot, searching for any sign of David or someone I might recognize. The minutes ticked by, and I began to wonder if I had been led into a wild goose chase.
Just when I was about to give up and leave, my phone chimed with a new message. I opened it, and the words made my stomach churn: “I’ll be in the female bathroom.”
Unease settled in my chest as I considered the message. It wasn’t what I had expected at all. I hesitated for a moment, my instincts warning me that something was off. But curiosity got the better of me, and I made my way to the female bathroom.
The way I rushed into the female bathroom from the door, I’m sure people who were at the restaurant probably thought I had gastroenteritis and was rushing to the bathroom to unload some major watery poo.
Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and intestines usually caused by viruses and bacteria. It can also happen as a side effect of taking certain medications or radiation therapy and can lead to unpleasant symptoms like fever, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting, loss of appetite and even bloody stools. It is also known as stomach flu.
Gastroenteritis usually goes away on its own. In the case of bacterial infections, antibiotics may sometimes be required. If you ever have gastroenteritis, just ensure you continue to stay hydrated by taking plenty of fluids and getting lots of rest while your body fights off the infection.
The door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit restroom. I stepped inside cautiously, my senses on high alert. A figure stood near the sinks, and as I got closer, I realised it was a young, beautiful lady. She appeared calm, almost as if she had been waiting for me.

I wasn’t sure if she was the person I was supposed to meet, I was about to turn and leave when she spoke, her voice soft but commanding. “Chioma.”
I froze, stunned that she knew my name. “Who are you?” I asked, my voice shaky with a mix of fear and curiosity. “How do you know me?”
The mystery lady didn’t answer my questions directly. Instead, she looked me in the eye and said, “Don’t worry about the details. What’s important is that I have a warning for you.”
My confusion deepened. “A warning? About what?” I asked.
“Leave David alone.” she replied.
I blinked, taken aback by her words. “What do you mean? Who are you to tell me that?”
But before I could press her further, the bathroom door swung open, and another lady entered, most likely a customer at the restaurant. The mystery lady didn’t say another word. She simply turned and walked out, leaving me standing there, bewildered and more confused than ever.
After leaving Doreenda Cafe, I returned home, still bewildered by the strange encounter in the bathroom. My mind was a whirlwind of questions and I knew I had to talk to someone about it. Ugochi was the first person who came to mind.
I grabbed my phone and dialled her number, and after a few rings, she answered. “Hey, Chioma,” she greeted, her voice warm and familiar.
“Ugochi, you won’t believe what just happened,” I began, my words spilling out in a rush. I recounted the entire bizarre encounter, from the mysterious message to the mystery woman’s warning.
There was silence on the other end for a moment, and then Ugochi spoke, her voice tinged with confusion. “That’s… strange. Do you have any idea who she might be?”
“I have no clue,” I replied, frustration evident in my voice. “She seemed to know who I am, but she didn’t reveal anything else about herself.”
Ugochi sighed. “This is so weird. Maybe it’s just a prank or something. But why mention David?”
“That’s what I can’t figure out,” I said, my mind still racing. “I mean, could it be someone from his past? Perhaps an ex? Or maybe someone who doesn’t want us to be together?”
Ugochi pondered my questions for a moment. “It’s possible, but it’s all so vague. We can’t jump to conclusions without more information.”
I nodded, even though she couldn’t see me through the phone. “You’re right, Ugochi. It’s just… unsettling.”
“We’ll figure it out,” Ugochi reassured me. “Maybe it’s best to lay low for a while and see if anything else comes up.”
Reluctantly, I agreed. “You’re probably right. I’ll try to focus on my work and not dwell on this too much.” I said, concluding the conversation and hanging up.
That weekend, I was watching TV, trying to fall asleep, when I heard a knock at my door. My heart leaped into my throat as I glanced at the clock, realising that it was well past midnight. Who could possibly be knocking at my door at this hour?
Hesitantly, I went to the door and opened it slowly, being very cautious not to open too wide so I could slam it shut in case it was Rowland, but to my surprise, when I opened the door, it was David standing there. His expression was a mix of anticipation and concern.
I chewed my lower lip, torn between my desire to see him and the lingering doubt that gnawed at me. David’s eyes met mine, and for a moment, neither of us spoke. The tension in the air was palpable.
My mind was a whirlwind of confusion, some thoughts in my head were telling me to ask him to leave and but my conflicting emotions wanted him to stay.
Should I confront him about the warning from the mysterious woman? Or should I simply ask him to go? These were the thoughts flashing through my head as I stood there trying to decide what to do next.
