Best Ranked Universities in Nigeria – 2025

COVENANT UNIVERSITY MAINTAINS STREAK AS NIGERIA’S HIGHEST-RANKING INSTITUTION ON THE TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION WORLD RANKINGS.
LANDMARK UNIVERSITY NOW 3RD IN NIGERIA

The Times Higher Education World Rankings, a comprehensive global ranking of universities published annually has released the 2025 rankings indicating Covenant and Landmark Universities among the top 3 universities in Nigeria.

The 2025 rankings which is always done 4 months in advance includes more than 2,000 institutions from 115 countries and territories.

Covenant University – a private university established by the Living Faith Church – which is Nigeria’s highest-ranking institution on the 2025 list fell within the 801-1000 global scale shortly followed by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), a 63 year old university on the 1001-1200.

Following in third place overall in Nigeria is Landmark University, the second placed private University established by the Living Faith Church in same global scale of 1001-1200.

All other universities in top 10 are between 40 and 60 years old while Covenant University is 22 and Landmark University- 13. This is unique as there is no other private university in Nigeria among the top 21.

The ratings were done based on the latest WUR 3.0 methodology which includes 18 carefully calibrated indicators to assess institutions across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook. The 2025 rankings includes 2,092 ranked universities. There are 185 new entries when compared with last year.

This year’s ranking is based on:
– 157 million citations
– 18 million research publications
– Survey responses from more than 93,000 scholars globally
