The Deputy Speaker of Anambra state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Pius Chukwuma Okoye (Ozo Mkpuluobi Amawbia) celebrates women on the international Women’s day most especially the women from Awka South constituency II.
International Women’s Day, a day that symbolizes our commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of women worldwide is supposed to be celebrated, Hon. Pius Chukwuma Okoye emphasizes.
Women have been the driving force behind social, economic, and political progress. Their relentless pursuit of justice, equality, and empowerment has shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for a more equitable world.
He acknowledges that the challenges women continue to face in our societies. Discrimination, violence, limited access to education and healthcare, and unequal representation in decision-making bodies still persist. It is not only our moral obligation but also our political duty to confront these obstacles head-on and work towards a more just future.

Ozo Mkpuluobi Amawbia harps on enacting more legislations that promote women’s empowerment, protect their rights, and ensure their full participation in all spheres of life. This includes addressing the gender pay gap, providing affordable childcare options, and combating gender-based violence. We must also work towards enhancing women’s representation in politics, corporate sectors, and senior leadership positions.
Moreover, we must recognize the importance of education in transforming societies and empowering women. We must invest in quality education for all, focusing particularly on empowering women and girls. By providing them with quality education, we equip them with the tools and knowledge to break free from the cycle of poverty, challenge societal norms, and participate actively in shaping their own destiny, Hon Pius stressed.
Furthermore, we must dismantle the toxic cultural norms that perpetuate gender inequality. It is our duty to challenge harmful practices such as child marriage, female genital mutilation, and gender-based violence. It is our responsibility to educate our communities, raise awareness, and create safe spaces where women are respected and their voices are heard.
Today, as we celebrate the accomplishments of women, let us not forget the intersectionality of their struggles. We must prioritize the empowerment of marginalized women and disabled women.
Investing in women is not just a noble cause; it’s a strategic imperative for societal progress. Women, comprising half of the global population, contribute significantly to every facet of our communities. By recognizing and empowering women, we accelerate progress in ways that benefit everyone.
